The Glenon pit you seek is actually Celynen. Because
of the Welsh soft mutation, Celynen (keluhnen -
phonetically) becomes Gelynen after Y (the). People
in the area actually pronounced it more like The
Glenun as you have seen.
In the 1960s there were two Celynen pits, south and
north both situated around Newbridge. North Celynen
was between Newbridge and Crumlin and is now the site
of the Aiwa electronics factory. The south Celynen
site was between Newbridge and Abercarn.
