Sorry. I have to disagree here. Brynmawr is not in, and has *never* been in
Monmouthshire. As you say, until 1974 it was in Breconshire, it was then
incorporated into the county of Gwent and since 1996 it has been a part of
the new Blaenau Gwent unitary authority.

Hi All,
Steffan is technically correct.
However, when Gwent was formed in 1974 it was to all intents and purposes the old county
of Monmouthshire under a new name with some minor border changes.
One of these was the incorporation of Brynmawr into the county. Some people regarded
Gwent to be synonymous with Monmouthshire, so Brynmawr could then be
said to be 'in Monmouthshire'. (A lot of residents still believe they're
living in Gwent although there is no longer a Gwent authority)
As for the Blaenau Gwent area, well, most of that was part of Gwent and, before that,
Monmouthshire. To add to the general merriment there is now a new unitary
authority that's called Monmouthshire - but it isn't the same as the 'old'
Monmouthshire!
It's all pretty confusing, even to the people who live there, which is why I've
written a page that tries to explain the various changes.
