Hi John et al, ONIONS is an odd name to say the least, I have indexed
several of our local censuses and the surname comes up fairly regularly,
albeit written in an *Irish* form O'NIONS sometimes. Whether it is in fact
an Irish name I don't know. I can't help in any other way, but you did say
you wanted to start the conversations off again !

Subject: [Bla'Gwent] LEGGE
Hi All
As has been said, this list covers a small area
and so the traffic is a little slow, but lets see
if we can get the conversation going again.
My connection to the area is via JOHN LEGGE et
al. I was born in Newport, Mon and my mother
always insisted that we were related to a Johnny
Onions (ie an itinerant sellar of French onions)
I have traced my mother's LEGGE side back to 1840
ish and have no scent of a French Onion!!! If
anyone has any LEGGE connections I would be
grateful to hear from them. I have my lot in 1881
and 2001, but any other traces of them would be
welcome.
Knowing what my mother was like and what family
history in general is like, it is highly likely
that there is a French Connection somewhere, but
at the moment it is somewhere elusive.
Has anyone else had unlikely family tales that
have eventually prooved right, despite them
appearing unlikely.
