There are still Legge families in Tredegar (shopkeeper, grocer, etc.
Onions a speciality;)) Perhaps the connection may have come from people
married into the Onions family? When I lived in Merthyr there was a
character called 'Georgie Onions' Think it could be his real name? Will
have to check in Merthyr library.
Using the free download software on Genuki (census 3b index) I entered
'Legge' surname only in the PRO 1901census(age 30 +/- 30) for males and
then females and a wildcard(*) for keyword of 'MON'
I entered 'sort' and BINGO it sorted out Legge's from Newport,
Pontypool, Abergavenny (grocer), Llantarnam, Staffordshire , Gloucester,
etc. One was even a bootmaker!
Weeeeeyyyy! Onions was even better! I entered same ages 30 +/- 30 and
entered 'Monmouthshire'. Westmorland, Shropshire, Gloucester,
Staffordshire, etc. were favourites.
great fun! Don't know if it would find a connection between the French
'Johnny Onion's', but you never know!

Hi All
As has been said, this list covers a small area
and so the traffic is a little slow, but lets see
if we can get the conversation going again.
My connection to the area is via JOHN LEGGE et
al. I was born in Newport, Mon and my mother
always insisted that we were related to a Johnny
Onions (ie an itinerant sellar of French onions)
I have traced my mother's LEGGE side back to 1840
ish and have no scent of a French Onion!!! If
anyone has any LEGGE connections I would be
grateful to hear from them. I have my lot in 1881
and 2001, but any other traces of them would be
welcome.
Knowing what my mother was like and what family
history in general is like, it is highly likely
that there is a French Connection somewhere, but
at the moment it is somewhere elusive.
Has anyone else had unlikely family tales that
have eventually prooved right, despite them
appearing unlikely.

Looking in vain for Harry S White born Burmah, India
circa 1854, was he a soldier's or a civil servant's son or what.
