was a drill instructor with the local TA I think. We later found out

he had won the VC in WW I and our local paper, the Surrey Comet unearthed

odd circumstance. Around the same time, there were three VS s one
to
Corporal Veale, another to a man called Sage and yet another to a soldier
called Onions or O'Nions.
Not surprisingly the paper made much of the play on words using the three
names in reverse alphabetical order "Veale, Sage and Onions help in the
war effort" or some such.
Not particularly apposite but just not heard the name Onions since I was
about 11.
