Hi Judy
Being intrigued by your request I could not resist "having a look". In view
of the history of the area I made the assumption that your ancestor was
employed in mining. I did a Google search on mining, then searched within
results for lander and searched within those results for Wales. I came up
with a lot of sites. The following were all taken from the first page of
results. I am sure you could find out more by trawling through all the
results and picking out those sites that appear relevant - some very
obviously are not. Sometimes one has to think laterally to find the answer
one seeks. I have one of those minds that finds lateral thinking easy,
sometimes easier than the obvious approach!
Best wishes

The following site quotes payments made to various people employed at a mine

Subject: [Bla'Gwent] Occupation help needed
Can anyone tell me what a Lander is and what they would do? I have
checked
through lots of old occupation sites and cannot find it. My
ancestor
Simon Tuck who married Lydia Davies in 1860 gave this as his occupation.
When he emigrated to Australia he gave his occupation as Butcher.
