I am looking for anyone who can trace their lineage to any of the Chartist
Leaders or to the two men who were killed, David Davies and his son from
Brynmawr during the uprising of 1839.
DAVID DAVIES and his son, both killed at Newport 4.11.1839 & buried in a
mass grave at St Woolos, Cathederal, Newport.
ISHMAEL EVANS age (at his trial in 1840) 51 years. Chairman of the Brynmawr
Branch of the Chartist Movement. Born in Cardigan. A
miner/cordwainer(shoemaker) by trade. Married with three young children. Sentenced at
Brecon 1840 to
7years Transportation which commuted to 3 years imp and served his sentence
at Millbank Penitentiary He died 1850/1860(?) The family lived Bailey Street
Brynmawr. It is not known where he was buried
DAVID LEWIS age 37 years, keeper of the King Crispin Inn, Boundry Street,
Brynmawr He married Margaret Davies at Cardigan on 2.12.1813. He had three
children, Ann Lewis 12 & Hannah Lewis age 8 (not born in Brynmawr) & John Lewis
age 3 born in Brynmawr. It is not known if Mrs Lewis was still alive in
1939/40. Also living at that adress Margaret Owen, 25, Evans Evans 35, and Ann
Evans 25. DAVID LEWIS was sentence to 7 years transportation, which was commuted
to 3 years imprisonment at Millbank Penitentiary. He became gravely ill in
prison and was released home , it is believed in 1843. He died at home and it
is believed that he was buried in one of the chapel cemeteries in Brynmawr,
One story is that he was buried with some of his family in Zion Chapel Cemetry.
Enquiries have been
made but no record can be found.
I would be extremly glad if someone can could help with any of these
enquies. It would be a mark of respect if the burial places such persons can be
officially recognised.
I understand that Zion Chapel Cemetery may be made into a car park/garden (?)
