Our relative George Neville moved to Brynmawr from Kingscote in
Gloucestershire in the late 1800s, he is listed in 1901 census as Commercial
traveller and Brewers Innkeeper, we believe he was the landlord of the
Victoria Hotel in Brynmawr, which does not exist any more. His wife,
Elizabeth, his sister, Lucy Neville, his brother Thomas Neville and
father-in law, Frederick Plummer lived with him at No 58 Bailey Street in
1901.
In around 1912, his other sister, Louisa Stevens joined him with her two
young boys Richard and Reginald Stevens following their father's death. We
know she worked as a barmaid for her brother and both brothers attended St
Mary's Primary School. We were told he owned a garage and some houses later
on. He adopted (or fostered) a boy called Percy Price who was living in
Caerleon with his wife and a Alfred Price in the 1950s. The little girl he
adopted, Ivy Kate Crockett died at 12 years of age, March 6th 1920, a year
before his wife died on February 4th 1904: we recently found their graves in
St Mary's church. A Mrs A. Price was landlady of the then Beaufort Inn some
years later, we presume related to Percy Price. We have a postcard addressed
to her as Auntie in the early forties by my husband's father (Louisa's son)
who was Georges Neville's nephew.
Any information and/or references to photos of Victoria Hotel would be
greatly appreciated.
