Hello All,
Anyone visiting Blaenau Gwent this Bank Holiday are reminded that
Sirhowy Ironworks is open to the public. On bank holiday Monday 10-4pm.
In fact the Ironworks is open to the public up until September. I
ventured over today to talk to Robert Short, mine host. He is so
interested in local history. His grandfather was in Sirhowy, Tredegar
aged 16, on the 1901 census. Believe the Shorts came from Somerset or
further South England.
Carmel Welsh Independent is open this Sunday at 5pm for tea, etc. The
public are all welcome.
I received a large number of artefacts from local Historian, Keith
Thomas, amongst chapel history and accounts, maps, etc.at our meeting
last week. An 1890 Carmel booklet , in Welsh language, was one which has
chapel members mentioned.
Beaufort Chapels and Churches seem to be making a big revival. The local
Gwent Gazette during the last few weeks have shown Soar and other
Baptist establishments enjoying renewed interest.
St Illtyd's, near Brynithel, is open to the public every Sunday to the
public. Worth a visit! Friends of St Illtyd's are making sure it is
manned. Volunteers are needed if anyone is interested. Contact me and I
can put you in touch with Coral Anthony.
best regards
Barrie Jones, Gwent Family History Society
