Dear Barrie
Sorry if I touched a nerve. It was innocently meant, though admittedly
quite sterile, as do doubt is the following.
I was only 11 when I left Blaina, and hardly ever left the village while I
lived there - (hardly ever left West Side!) -maybe a weekly trip to the new
pool in Ebbw Vale with the school, and I realise now that I absorbed things
in a different way - never really thought about them, they either went in or
didn't. I had just been left with an impression of a north/south valley,
and your posting made me think about it. I didn't go as far as getting a
map out though.
I read your postings with interest - particularly the recent one about the
walks. I don't get down to Blaina much any more, but hope to be there
sometime in the summer - with a compass.
best wishes
Anne

Subject: [Bla'Gwent] re-Old Blaina and the museum
Strange how one slip of the compass can excite such sterile postings
to
the list ;))
It's been dead on BG list for a couple of weeks and I do try to come up
with something constructive, sometimes:)) Must have had nightmares
thinking of my mistake, eh Ann;)) Took Keith to come to the rescue and
yes Keith, I do see the sun setting in Ebbw Vale.... rarely:)
When you are standing in Blaina Museum with Cmwcelyn in the background
it is easy to understand Nantyglo is West and Bournville is east of the
museum, not geographically correct of course but you know what I mean?
*notice* this is the constructive bit:-
Went to Blaina museum *again* this morning to deposit a 1841 O.S. map
that I had surplus to my needs. It looked a very strange map as the
railway wasn't built at the time! Cwmcelyn was an 'Estate' back in 1841
of course.
They have a good selection of photos at the museum. I think people in
Blaina and Nantyglo are starting to realise that they have a museum! A
lot of artefacts of all kinds have been donated.
They now have the 1901 census for Blaina and Nanyglo and even a
computer! If I'd had 5 Blaina books with me this morning I could have
sold them all. They really are good value for money, I'm not just saying
this. I told everyone about the Ebbw Vale Corus book and they sold out
and everyone was disappointed, until they started re-printing them again
last year.
If you have any photos, articles, artefacts, Old Blaina coal lumps, Old
Blaina small coal or anything relating to Blaina just deposit it at
Blaina Museum.
Best regards
Barrie Jones, Gwent.
