Hi Penny,
You did see this on Ancestry.com? (see below)
Name: Alphonso T. Griffith
Year: 1889
Place: Allegheny Co., Pennsylvania
Source Publication Code: 9701
Primary Immigrant: Griffith, Alphonso T
Source Bibliography: WESTERN PENNSYLVANIA
GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY, Pittsburgh, compilers. A List of
Immigrants Who Applied for Naturalization Papers in
the District Courts of Allegheny County, Pennsylvania.
Pittsburgh: the society. Vol. 6, 1881-1891. 1981.
138p.
Page: 34
Sorry if the formatting is messed up. At least you can
see that he applied for naturalization in 1889. The
Allegheny County Courthouse in Pittsburgh should have
copies of his application... and prior to 1889 he
should have filed a Declaration of Intent to become a
citizen. That usually is done 3 years before applying
for naturalization. And normally he'd had to be in the
U.S. for 2 years before filing a declaration.
(See

I don't know if I'm giving you information that you
already know - sorry if this is 'old hat' to you!
My great-grandfather came over from Scotland in 1880
and I could never pin down the date until I found his
Declaration of Intent in the local county courthouse
where he settled (Tioga County, Pennsylvania). In the
declaration, he stated he arrived in New York in June
1880. That gave me something to look for in the ship's
passenger index microfilm that I got from the Family
History Center, which eventually led me to finding him
on a ship's list.
Our local (Orlando, FL) library supposedly has
Philadelphia ship's passengers indexes. I need to find
another relative that I think came in through
Pennsylvania. The next time I get a chance to go to
the library, I'll try to remember to check the index
there and see if Alphonso is listed anywhere, if he
came in through Philadelphia.
