Hi,Ian: Most of the info I have on my g gf David SMITH came from an article
written about him in 1924 in the Ebbw Vale Works Magazine. I have also
found online references to him as the Under-Manager of the R H mine. I
don't have any knowledge of other mine records. The first site below is a
good site for mining info and the second has some names of child mine
workers (and others):

Your Sages and Purnells ? are on the same 1901 census Page as the Smith
family (David was married to his third wife, Alice, by then with a whole new
family: Hilda, Cuthbert, Brindley, Alice and Dorothy. They were living at
Number 5, so I guess they all knew each other. Were any of your family
members of the Cwmtillery Brass Band by any chance? David Smith founded the
band and conducted it for many years. He was also a member of the
Abertillery and District council for 14 years.
