Dear Clare
Guest, Keen & Nettlefold Ltd became GKN Ltd and later GKN plc.
Earlier history: Guest, Keen & Nettlefold was formed, I think in the
early twentieth century, through a merger. The Guest part came from
the old Dowlais Iron Company. In the mid-nineteenth century, the
Dowlais Iron Company was one of the four big iron companies in
Merthyr Tydfil, a few miles from Tredegar and Ebbw Vale. It was owned
by the Guest family. Towards the end of the nineteenth century, this
company took over the Cyfarthfa Iron works, owned by the Crawshay
family, which had been its main local competitor.
