South Wales is on the other side of the Bristol Channel to Devon and
Somersetand is approximately 15 miles wide from North Devon to South Wales.
The phrase is used in reference to those who followed 'the work' and
travelled to Wales during the 1800's.
My ancestors also travelled the same route from Totnes to Pontllanfraith.
Best wishes

Subject: [BlaenauGwent] Across the water
Could someone kindly take the time to explain what the phrase" across the
water" means?
The context in which I heard it was in a statement went something like this:
"when my ancestors left the Bideford area in Devonshire [ for south wales;
namely Pontllanfraith] in the early 20th century; they went across the
water" Thanks for any help.
