Sorry Daryl my mistake.
I had also posted on the Monmouthshire list.
I had 2 replies which I will cut and paste for you here.
This is the first reply
" As time moved on, the GRO volume numbers changed more and more
frequently.
From;
http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/reg/districts/bedwelty.html
GRO volumes : 11a (1861-1946); 8C (1946-74)"
And this is the second reply
"Just above the search button on
www.freebmd.org.uk homepage is a sentence:
PLEASE NOTE: WE HAVE NOT YET TRANSCRIBED THE WHOLE INDEX. A breakdown by
event and year can be viewed here.
The word 'here' links to
http://www.freebmd.org.uk/progress.shtml which
allows you to see the extent of coverage of Births Marriages and Deaths.
Coverage of Deaths at the moment is good from 1837 to 1909 and partial from
1910 to 1935, though most of 1910 to 1930 are well covered, with more
records being added each month.
FreeBMD is a database constructed by the work of over ten thousand
volunteers and additional volunteer transcribers may take part by following
the 'Join FreeBMD' link on the home page.
Any FreeBMD search for an event in Bedwellty district which yields a result
will give a link on the word 'Bedwellty' (or Bedwelty in some years when the
anglicised spelling was used) which gives a further link to
http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/reg/districts/bedwelty.html which shows that
the district existed from 1st July 1861 to 1974, and that the volume number
changed (as indeed did all volume numbers for districts in England and
Wales) in 1946.
Images of index pages of deaths around 1970 should be on Ancestry ( which
should be available on computers on most or all public libraries and
Archives in Wales as a result of Welsh Assembly Government subsidy) and
Findmypast, as well as being available on microfiche or microfilm in a
number of research centres."
Hope it helps you, good luck!
Regards
Angela

I'm sure it's fine to mention whomever you would like, so long as it's
helpful. I am curious as to what replies you are speaking of. I only
received your response, no others. Were the responses to the
blaenaugwent(a)rootsweb.com ? Or to your personal email? I'm wondering if I'm
missing some messages somewhere. :)
Thanks for the info,
Daryl

Hi Daryl,
I used the GenesReunited site, but it is not free to search!
I hope I have not broken any rules mentioning the above site.
You will see by the replies on the list that there are Volume numbers
other than 11a for Bedwellty.
I can now send for my grandmothers death cert.
Since finding out about the new numbers, I have since found more birth and
deaths...yipppy!
Good luck in your searches Daryl, I hope my post and the answers have
helped you also.
Regards
Angela

Hello Angela,
I can only confirm that I have also only come up with 11a as a Volume
number
for that area. I don't see a reason why it would change, but I have not
looked at a date that was as recent as 1970. What online search gave that
info? Perhaps a transcription or other error?
Daryl
