Barrie
Thanks for this, but like you I was trying to help Judy. I've forwarded this
info on to her.

Colin found the same freebmd that I told you of on the Monmouthshire
list.
She was aged 15, so she lied about her age probably.
I found this on 1851 at Trowbridge:-

It maybe worthwhile getting the M/C of William and Eliza and she may be
shown as 'minor' (under 21) with father John!
The woollen industry was really in a bad state around late 1830's
onwards, and that why droves of people came to Wales and the mines and
Ironworks.
My wife's ancestors (Jeremiah Davis, tailor) worked in the woollen
industry at Bradford-On-Avon and he came to Tredegar and set up as a
tailor, supplying the local workers with hand crafted clothes, suits,
etc. from 1840's. His family didn't have to work in the mines or
ironworks and the families to this day are employers, not employees.
Wonderful life if you can get it.
A good source of information is the book:-
"Warp and Weft" The Story of the Somerset & Wilts woollen industry, by
Kenneth H. Rogers the X County Archivist, pub 1986 ISBN 0-86023-264-6:
In 'People of Old Blaina from 1840' I found a Methodist baptism of Mary
Ann Pollard (1876) to Hubert (Herbert!) and Jane Pollard. They are shown
as Blaina in 1881, Herbert is born in Trowbridge!
This is Hubert in 1851:-

Notice that Hubert is William (born 1838) elder brother. So it maybe the
both families came to Wales the same time?
Barrie Jones, Gwent
In message , Needavaca02(a)aol.com writes:-
My great grandmother, Eliza Knowles Pollard married my Great
grandfather, Alfred Griffin in Nantyglo in 1867. Eliza was from
Trowbridge. Looks like she was widowed from a Pollard possibly from
Monmouthshire. Does anyone know of a Knowles, Pollard, or Griffin name
that might connect.
Thank you,
Judy
