Hello list. Greetings from Ohio.
I' m researching the families of John and Mary (EDWARDS) CHARLES.
They were married 14 May 1841 at Brynmawr, Breconshire, Wales. They came
to America about 1853, settling in Pomeroy, Meigs co., Ohio. John and
most of his family were coal miners. I believe John's parents are
Charles and Mary (JONES) CHARLES.
According to Welsh census records, I believe Charles was born abt 1783
and Mary nee JONES was born about 1789, both in Carmarthenshire. John
was born about 1810 in Merthyr, Glamorganshire, and Mary nee EDWARDS was
born about 1820 in Llandovery, Carmarthenshire.
Other possible children for Charles and Mary are: David, born about
1820 in Blania, Monmouthshire. I believe he married Ann WATKINS and also
later came to Ohio; Mary CHARLES, born about 1821 in Nantyglo,
Monmouthshire; and Daniel CHARLES, born about 1833 in Carmarthenshire.
I got all of these places of birth from census records. In 1851 they
were all living in Garn Fach, Aberystruth parish, Monmouthshire.
The marriage record for John and Mary says that her father's name is
John EDWARDS. I think it says he was a shoemaker.
There is a death record for a Charles CHARLES indexed for December
quarter, Abergavenny, 1854, volume 11A, page 58. I think this might be
John's father Charles. Can somebody tell me a way to get this
certificate without writing to the General Register Office? I got John
and Mary's marriage license that way. I had to get a bank draft in
pounds sterling. The bank here charges a big fee for that service. I am
hoping to find an easier way.
