I think it is Varteg, sorry. Would it also be just below Blaenavon?

I'm not familiar with anywhere called Vartage; but perhaps you are referring
to Varteg?
Kelly's 1901 Directory describes Varteg (in the parish of Abersychan) thus:

VARTEG is a hamlet, with a station on the Abersychan section of the London
and North Western railway, about 5½ miles north from Pontypool. Here are
Wesleyan and Primitive Methodist Chapels.
On the Varteg mountains are the extensive mining and colliery works of
Messrs.John Vipond and Co Limited.
At Lower Varteg there are also other collieries belonging to the Lower
Varteg Co Limited.
