I am sure you'll get many responses on this - but for me, this is where I would go -
to the "Free Births, Deaths and Marriages Index" (FreeBMD for short):
http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/
From there, you can search the index to your heart's content. If you find some
records that may fit the person/event you're looking for, you can order a copy of the
actual certificate from the Office of National Statistics in England (ONS) of the GRO
(General Records Office).
I have had no trouble ordering certificates via email, giving all the particulars such as
GRO reference numbers, etc. that the FreeBMD search will give you. I supply my VISA
information (I am trusting), and within a few weeks I have my certificates. The cost is
roughly 8.00. It's wonderful.
Apparently you can now order online, which wasn't available when I was sending for my
certificates. The FreeBMD site gives links to where you need to go to order your
certificates.
I did a quick search in Monmouthshire for Richard POWELL, but came up blank. Perhaps he
was born in a different county? You can fiddle with the search criteria and perhaps get
lucky.
Good luck!

Aloha & thanx, it`s the 1st break in the armor covering this mystery for
me at least. Now, if You were me, what would the next step(s) be? I need
to know where to go from. If one knows where & when a person was born
which we do in this case, how does one find his/her birth certificate
whci I`d think would mention the new born`s parents name. Did they have
published birth announcements then or better, THERE then?
Since no one in my living family seems to give a hoot, & I`m stuck in
Hawaii for at least 2 years until I can get to Wales (please don`t worry
or Pray for me. If one is to be "stuck somewhere, for an extended time,
this is not a place to suffer it badly !...my branch of the "Powells" of
S. Wales is possessed by the travel gene as one would expect. Now that
I`m HERE, it could end with my daughter!) how & where do I turn your
info into more precise leads? My friend who is Mormon & Hawaiian & who
already has a much more detailed family history/tree etc, says the work
she has to do in her own family is so time consuming she just hasn't
started it & I guess that's close to sacrilege in their church. I'm not
at all embarrassed to point out I`m clearly a newbie with no real clue
how to delve into this. But with your help & assisstence I`ve now at
least begun.

Hello Listers!
The LDS just called to say that the 1861 Rhymney Census Film I ordered
just
arrived. I will be going there first thing in the morning to find my
Thomas
Isaac and family (I'm still trying to determine which kids are his and
which
aren't as the index doesn't tell you that).
If anyone wants me to check anything, please get back to me ASAP.
