Hi Angela
There was the Merthyr, Tredegar and Abergavenny Railway, initially started
in August 1858 by a consortium of ironmasters and others, including Crawshay
Bailey, James Charles Hill, William Forster Batt, Thomas Brown and John
Jayne. Other early directors were Isaac Isaacs, Edward Charles Strode and
Henry Thomas. The first passenger train ran from Abergavenny to Brynmawr on
29th September 1862. The line was fully absorbed by the London & North
Western Railway (L.N.W.R.) in June 1866 and the whole route to Merthyr
Tydfil completed by 1879.
The M.T.& A. Railway was later integrated with the London, Midland and
Scottish Railway (L.M.S.) network in 1923. The country's railway system was
subsequently nationalised in 1948. The last official passenger traffic ran
on the route on Saturday 4th January 1958, with a special 'last train'
organised by the Stephenson Locomotive Society the following day.
There was also a line from Newport to Tredegar which opened to passenger
traffic using steam locomotives on 19th June 1865. This line was run by the
Monmouthshire Railway & Canal Company until the business was amalgamated
with the Great Western Railway (G.W.R.) on 1st August 1880.
Maybe others who recall using trains either to or from Tredegar may be able
to help, too?
If you have difficulty finding your great grandfather don't forget that
locomotive engine drivers were also employed by the colliery companies on
local lines run as part of the workings.
Best regards

Subject: [BLAENAUGWENT] Railway companys in Tredegar 1890-1929
Hello listers,
would anyone on the list know what railway companys operated in Tredegar?
Please.
The years I'm interested in are around 1890 to about 1929.
I hope to find records of locomotive engine drivers.
It was my g grandfathers occupation at the time of his marraige in 1896.
And the same on the 1901 census.
He died in 1940 age 76.
On his death cert it also states, "A retired locomotive engine driver".
Any help appreciated
Best wishes to all
Angela
