Is there anyone out there who has a connection to a Mary Davies, formerly
Davies, born about 1830 or 1835, married (?) to a William Davies, an "Iron
Baller" who lived on Tredegar Road, Rumney, Monmouth, in 1859. They had four
children. The oldest, Polly was born abt 1855, Priscilla, born about 1857,
William, born abt 1859, and Sarah Jane, born in 1862. They were all supposedly
born in Ebbw Vale. They at least lived there for awhile. Mary Davies is shown
on an 1871 census in Ebbw Vale as living with an unmarried brother named -
would you believe - William Davies! Sarah Jane Davies is my
great-grandmother. She and her husband, James Brace, immigrated to Pennsylvania about
1881.
Sarah Jane states in a biography that she never knew her father. I don't
know if he died when she was young, or before she was born, but the father is
not listed on Sarah Jane's birth certificate. If anyone has any connection to
any of the above four children, I would greatly appreciate any fur!
ther information on their parentage.
Thanks. Joyce Morgan

Joyce,
Your inquirery concerning Mary Davies of Tredegar, Wales intrigued me. My
great-uncle John Davies/Davis of Tredegar(1839-1918) mentioned he had a sister
named Mary chr. 13 Jul 1830 in Tredegar, Wales but gave no further
information concerning her marriage or life.
I think I found the Chr. of Mary Davies in the Tredegar Independent Chapel (
see FHC film #596994, item #2) daughter of David Davies (Collier) and Mary,
Chr. 13 July 1830, birth 16 June 1830. Because of the commonness of her
christen name and surname I do not believe I will ever find a marriage or death
record for her. Her brother John did not indicate she had married when he wrote
of her in 1917. I found her with parents David Davies & Mary his wife in
the 1841 Census for Manmoel or Manhoel, Tredegar Dist., Bedwelty Parish,
Monmouth, England (FHL film #438846 Dist #17). David 40 (not born in county), Mary
35, David 15, Ester 15, Thomas 13, Mary 11, Jane 7, & John 1 yr 4 mo.
Mary had three brothers David (1823)who stayed in Wales, Thomas(my
great-grandfather, 1828-1892) and John(1839-1918) who emigrated to Utah & Louisiana,
USA. Also two sisters, Esther(1825) & Jane(1834-1899) who had large families
in Wales and grandchildren who emigrated to Pennsylvania & New York ,USA.
Her father David (1799) emigrated to the USA and died in Ohio in 1865, while
her mother Mary (1804)died in Wales in 1846.
John her brother indicated she had an uncle named William but I have no
further information on her uncles.
Her grandfather was John Davies a blacksmith and her maternal grandparents
were William Leyshon, a coal miner and Jane Lewis of Merthyr Tydfil, Wales.
I'm not sure that my great aunt Mary Davies is who you are looking for. So
this is just an overview of what I have on David Davies and his daughter Mary
Davies. If you would like to know more about her extended family I will be
happy to share it with you.
Kent Davis

Having no father stated on your birth certificate usually points to
illigitimacy. Having read your email it seems the 1871 census states for the Davies
family you mention that a William Davies listed as a brother to Mary as you
quite rightly say, but that both William & Mary his sister are both unmarried,
so in fact all 4 children were all born out of wedlock. I cant find this
family on the 1861 census but it could be because there are several thousand
people missing in this area from the census due to the census being lost.
However I did find a family in Llanelly Breconshire in 1851 that could the
family of William & his sister Mary. Parents were Thomas & Elizabeth aged 49
&
50 born Bedwellty & Goytre Monmouthshire. The aged of William & Mary have a
2yr difference to 1871 which is neither here or there, but there birthplaces
are the same, his being Llanelly Brecs and hers being Aberystruth.
