Dear John,
Bwlch-Y-Garn is accessed from Lovain terrace in Newtown, Ebbw Vale,
bypassing Cwmdraw industrial and heading past what was the Morning Star
Public house (now a private cottage).
Bwlch-Y-Garn farm is just past the morning Star. It is a rough road over
the Top of Bwlch-y-Garn mountain now and eventually leads over to
Coalbrookvale (between Nantyglo and Blaina)
Bwlch-Y-Garn mountain is some 1,700 feet above sea level! Few people
lived there prior to industrialisation. There were trackways between the
properties. on the mountain. There is a large cairn (where Bwlch-y-garn
gets it's name- Pass/gap by the cairn)
In 1920's bronze axe heads were found on the mountain proving that
prehistoric man lived there at one time!
"A history of Ebbw Vale" by Arthur Gray-Jones has brief outlines of the
farms that existed in that area. ISBN 1 897915 00 4
Have you found the family on 1861 census?
best regards

Dear Listers,
I have a death certificate dated 1856 noting a place (or area) called
Bwlch-y-Garn, in the sub district of Aberystruth. Could someone with local
knowledge of the area please tell me where this place lies in the district.
The certificate records the death of Ann Bradford, one member of a family
that I have been researching for a few years.
With regards,
John Pritchard
