Hi Audrey
You should be fine in September. My sister and I usually go in May and
September (to do family history things!). Our ancestors are also from
Abertillery. Go armed with as much detail as you have. Cwmbran Records
Office is the best place for records - the staff are helpful and you should
find Electoral Registers, Census, Court Records, etc. You have to ask the
staff to get out some of the books for you to look through, so the more info
you have the better (you can only ask for a couple at a time if I remember
correctly) - I guess it depends how busy they are. They used to be closed
on Mondays - you may want to check. Their e-mail address is
gwent.records(a)torfaen.gov.uk and their telephone number is 01633 644886 or
01633 644888 Fax: 01633 648382
There is also Powys Archives which have some records (it just depends where
the borders came in the years you are looking at) - you can always e-mail
them at archives(a)ntmail.powys.gov.uk and ask them if they have the records
you need. They are based in Llandrindod Wells which is quite a way to go (I
have done it once and didn't get much from it unfortunately). Tel: 01597
826088.
Local libraries have some records also, and are very helpful. Don't forget
the cemetaries if you have specific information. If you have any addresses
in Abertillery I can ask my Aunt if she knew any of them - she is 90 but
very good at remembering things!
Good luck with your searches and enjoy Wales - it is a great place.
Best regards
Iris
