Hello Everyone!
I have been researching my PRICE family who moved from Herefordshire to various parts of
Wales in the l870s. Now that I have a lot of the names and dates I would like to try to
understand where and how they lived.
I am particularly interested in information anyone may have on Pentre Cottage, Govilon,
Llanwenarth Ultra - and whether the cottage is still in existence. My g. grandmother's
brother, Charles Martin PRICE, lived in Llanwenarth Ultra, working as a platelayer, from
ca 1879 until his death in l9l5. His wife and family may well have stayed on at Pentre
Cottage for a while after this.
I copied the description of boundaries from the enumerator's notes for the l891 census
and Pentre Cottage was listed within the following housing pattern:
"Llanwenarth Ultra: Comprising the houses on the Canal Bank, The Gardeners Arms, Old
Pentwyn Cottages, the houses on the Canal Yard, the house on the L&NWR yard, then
taking the houses on both sides the said Parish Road as far as the Pentre Cottage, the
Pentre and Typwll Farms, Llanwenarth House etc............
Is anyone familiar with the area able to say whether the cottage might still be there?
Also, while I am writing, can anyone suggest the most likely place for Charles to have
been buried in l9l5? Sadly he died on Christmas day of that year ... so being that it was
winter time I cannot imagine he would have been buried far from home. (Just a thought!)
Hope someone will be able to give me a lead or two.
Best wishes
