Hi Jerry
Thanks for your e-mail.
First of all I'd double check in the 1851 Census to make sure whether both
parents were actually born in the Llanelly district or if the enumerator was
just being lazy in 1861 and merely marked people down as having been born
locally - either not having collected the correct information in the first
place or being unable to read the handwriting . . .
If you can confirm pretty much for certain that Elizabeth's parents were
born in Llanelly (Monmouthshire not Carmarthenshire) then to check for her
baptism you'd need to look up the records of the Parish Church of St Ellyw
(Elli), Church Road, Gilwern. These are held by the Gwent Record Office at
Cwmbran:
http://www.llgc.org.uk/cac/cac0004.htm
The reference would be: Llanelly Parish Church baptisms 1813-42: D/Pa 22.2
If you can find her baptism first, then her date of birth is likely to have
been 1-3 months earlier, but also check for the baptisms of other siblings -
to make sure there wasn't a delay of a year or so because of eg. illness.
Her year of birth would be the best single piece of information to use as a
check-point for obtaining the correct death certificate.
If you have a William Williams in your family (as a brother of Elizabeth),
who ended up being a lime burner at Blackrock, Llanelly, around 1880, then
yesterday I've just added him into my book for the history of limestone
working in the Clydach Gorge after the Brecon Boat Co. was wound up!

Hi Clive,
Thanks for the tip about getting Southport to do a search for me. With
Elizabeth's husband's name, and probable place of death being Cheltenham
Street at the Clydach Ironworks, hopefully they will be able to find the
right certificate.
I have her mother's Christian name from the 1861 census. This lists Abraham
and Ann Williams, aged 75 and 73 respectively. Both give their birth place
as Llanelly, so I presume that they are both from long established families
in that town. They are definitely her parents, as they are looking after her
young son, Sydney, my gt.grandfather.
I've just done a search on the IGI, and found an Elizabeth Williams
christened on 28/10/1829 at Newadd, Llanelly, daughter of Abraham and Ann
Williams. There are a LOT of Elizabeth Williams, but this one is the only
one with the right parents' names, and birth town. I wonder what parish
records I would have to search to find this record? I've just noticed that
this is a submitted and not an extracted record, so I obviously must treat
it with caution.

Hi Jerry
Thanks for your reply.
It looks like there are three Elizabeth Matthews deaths to
choose from in the Crickhowell and Abergavenny districts
between 1857-61. What you need is the DoVE web-site up and
running where ages of death will be provided back to 1837, as
with later years at present, without having to order up the
actual certificates. But this may take longer to appear in
public than you wish to wait!
You should be able to order up the certificate for Elizabeth
Matthews, based on her address in Cheltenham Street as a
check-point (or, preferably, her year of birth if you know
it, or perhaps even her husband as being the possible
informant?) - i.e. provide details of all three deaths,
starting with the one that you think is the most likely and
ending with the least likely. To do this costs a little more
than £7, but not as much as ordering
3 x £7. You even get a part refund if none of the entries
matches the check-point.
Don't rule out Abergavenny completely as it is only a little
further away from Cheltenham Street than Crickhowell and
Elizabeth may not have died at home. If the latter is the
case then using 'Cheltenham Street' as a check-point would
draw a blank, so you'll probably be better off using her
(approximate)age as the check-point.
In the IGI records, accessed via the Family Search pages of
the Church of Jesus Christ of LDS, at:
http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp
there is an entry for:
Elizabeth Williams, born 21st June 1826, christened 20th
August 1826 at the Tabernacle Calvinistic Methodist Chapel,
Llantwit Major, Glamorgan, Wales.
Father: Abraham Williams; mother: Elizabeth John.
Do you have Elizabeth's mother recorded on the marriage
certificate as a witness, or any brother or sister of hers
whose birth you could check up on via the site above, for
comparing their parent's names and area of abode?
The entries that you can generally rely on are marked:
'Extracted birth or christening record for the locality
listed in the record' - which the above entry is.
