Hi Jerry
The best I can find on the internet is the set of pictures by John Ball:
http://people.brunel.ac.uk/~simon/blaina/wfha/980926.htm
but, as you point out, there's nothing like seeing the works as they
originally appeared!
Have you come across this death entry:
DEC 1857 Elizabeth Matthews Abergavenny 11a 48
- it fits in perhaps with Cinwen Matthews' birth?
DEC 1857 Cinwen Matthews Crickhowell 11b 131
Some of the 1861 Census records are missing. It's always possible that
Cinwen was left off and was actually living with her grandfather, like her
brother was. Alternatively, perhaps she was in a hospital and either not
included in the enumeration at all or only included for her initials?
A second copy of my original reply has just turned up on the list - please
ignore it as there was some bother sending it, so in the absence of anything
having appeared I sent a second copy to make sure it got through OK. A
second e-mail which I sent to the list on a separate subject, at 21:43 on
28/10, still hasn't appeared yet.

Hi Clive,
Thanks for the information regarding the pictures, but I was hoping to
perhaps find something on the web that I could see.
The name Cinwen has given me a few problems. I haven't been able to find
it
in any of the on line Welsh name dictionaries. The nearest name appears to
be Ceinwen, as you suggest. I've just checked her birth certificate (a
copy
of the handwritten original) again, and it definitely does say Cinwen.
This
is also the spelling in the 1881 census, the only other official reference
I
have to her. She is definitely not listed in either her father's or her
grandfather's household in the 1861 census. As you say, I always have to
check all possible variations of spelling when checking indexes. Mathews
is
a particular pain, as I have to check with one or two "T"s, and with or
without the "S". Transcribers invariably want to use two "T"s.
Regards
Jerry White
