Pam,
Thanks, but this is not the one I'm after. We actually stayed there last
year and I can recommend it. It's also a good example of an old Welsh pub.
I discovered that this Royal Exchange has been the local for another branch
of my family for 80+ years. My second cousin lives right opposite.
However, the one I am after is up the road somewhere in Beaufort. I check
on the census and both are there, so I know they are different.

Hello Peter
Could this be it?

Dear List,
Does anyone know where a pub called the Royal Exchange was in Beaufort? I
have a
possible relative, William Williams, Publican, b. Gloucestershire, living
in Beaufort from 1851
to 1871 per the censuses. He is married to Susan/Susannah b. Llangattock
Mon.
In 1851 no name is given.
In 1861 the Pub is called the Royal Exchange and is between Chapel Houses
, a Chapel and
Evans Row.
In 1871 it's just called Ale House and is between the Williams Houses and
the Bank Houses.
In 1881 Susannah is a widow and Proprietor of houses, living in one of the
Exchange
houses.
We visited Gwent last week and drove along the road from Brynmawr to Ebbw
Vale, but we
could not see any likely candidates.
Any suggestions would be gratefully received.
