Hello! I am new to the list and come seeking help.
After many months pursuing finally the Jones branch of my mother's family, I went to
Cwmbran to the Records Office on a day trip to try to find the family of my great great
grandfather, George Jones, son of the haulier George Jones and his wife Sarah.
The 1881 Census, his marriage certificate and his death certificate all give mutually
exclusive dates, within a four year span. But it IS the same
man. He should have been born in Tredegar between 1859-1863. But the GRO gives no match in
the right place and the local Record Office
tried for me to no avail either.
I therefore went through the records in Cwmbran and found - to my surprise - very few
Jones families at all. I then tried the non-Conformist records and found a match in the
records of the Wesleyan Methodist Chapel in Sirhowy, Brecon which was on the same circuit
as the Methodist Chapel in
Tredegar. George was the fifth child of George and Sarah Jones born 18 October 1868, and
bap 19 November 1868. This date is well wide
of the mark though to match up with the other dates known to me. It would mean that when
he married Mary Jane Hale he was aged only 17 too,
on 1 March 1885 in Bedwellty.
I tried the 1871 Census earlier in the year at the FRC but could not find the family there
in Tredegar in 1871. I wondered whether anyone had an index to the Census to find him in
the area? If he was born in 1868 he should be 3 and living with his parents George and
Sarah Jones, and siblings John, William Henry, Clara Jane and Thomas. None of these were
at home in 1881 so that doesn't help me either!
If someone could find him there and his father not be a haulier, I probably need to try
something else, but at least I can eliminate this family. His mother Sarah comes from
Radstock in Somerset so that also makes the family a little more distinctive.
On the other hand, if someone could find another match through the 1871 Census, I can try
another avenue, so I'd be grateful for any pointers.
Thank you for any help!
Best wishes,
Annette Reynolds
