Subject: [Bla'Gwent] Powell family in Beaufort
Hello Everyone,
The a portion of the following was sent out in 2001, and with new Powell
family researchers on these lists, I thought it a good time to resend.
At this point, I am trying to get more information on the William Powell
living in Beaufort HIll at the time of the 1841 Census, and find out
whether
anyone ever located the Cambrian Inn in Beaufort.
This is what I have on my Powell line-
John Powell born ca 1835 in Crickhowell (per 1861 census). Married Ann
Edmunds in 1856 at Carmel Independent Chapel in Beaufort. Marriage
certificate
states his age is 22 years, occupation as "collier" living
at Beaufort, and
father
John deceased farmer.John/Ann living at Waun Du (near Waun Horst)
occupation
"innkeeper" at Cambrian Inn per 1861 census. Family
emigrated shortly
after
1863.Children: Sarah b. Feb 1857; David b Nov 1858 (birth cert notes
Llangynidr Road as residence; Samuel J b. Aug 1861; and William b Jun 1863
(birth
cert
notes Waun Goch as residence). I have not located any christening
records
for
the above children.
Note: I have reviewed the 1841 & 1851 Llangattock/Crickhowell area census
for John w/parents. 2 possibilities in 1841 but can't confirm at this
point.
By 1851 two entries living as lodger w/no family..
One is an entry for a John Powell, age 19 born Crickhowell living
w/Margaret
Morgan family in Garnlydan. This Morgan family is found in 1841 in
Cwmgwybedog but no Powell family in that area.
The other entry is William Powell age 30 yrs, living in Beaufort Hill on
1841
census where William is an innkeeper. Living with him is Phoebe, age
30,
wife; John age 6 son; Jacob age 4 son; Mary age 2 dau; and Margaret age 1
yr dau.
Also on the 1841 Census, James Powell, age 14 and Elizabeth Powell,
age 11
are
found living in the home of Thomas and Elizabeth Jones on Standard
Street
in
Crickhowell.
Speculation-By 1851, Phoebe, age 41, born Talgarth (late wife of William
?)along with children are living w/Thomas Jones in Crickhowell. (Whether
this is
the same Thomas Jones as above noted has not been confirmed.) Thomas
and
Phoebe may have a 7 mo old son Thomas. Or he may be the son of the
Elizabeth
noted
on the 1841 census. The son John age 15 is noted as collier born
Llangynidr. Age and occupation match but birthplace and fathers name are
off.
Unless
of course his fathers name was William John Powell or John William
Powell.
Mary, age 12 dau and Margaret, age 11 are also living with Thomas and
Phoebe.
The three Powell children are all listed as "lodgers".
At this point, I am trying to determine where John came from. Parish
registers from Llangattock, Llanelly, Llangynidr, Crickhowell, and Cwmdu
have
all been checked for any family pattern with no verification.
MI's have
also
been reviewed. The Carmel Chapel register book containing membership
entries
was
reviewed finding a John Powell, Tailor from Ebbw Vale listed along with
Evan
who on census entries I have found living in Beaufort but have found
no
family connection at this point. Tithe schedules for Crickhowell and
Llangattock were also reviewed.
I have tried to trace the Cambrian Inn through the Badminton Estate
records,
but did not locate the lease for John Powell. Found in Brycheiniog
98-99
is
reference to William Morgan, publican, Cambrian Inn, Beaufort in
1841. In
Hunts Directory 1849 William Gardner is innkeeper at the Cambrian Inn. By
Slaters
Directory 1858-59 the Cambrian is not listed.
I have located leases for the Cwmgwybedog property and also Lewis Morgan
lease of a house, stable, garden near Waun Dew near Beaufort Iron Works in
1829,1836 and again in 1840. Lewis was a member of the Morgan family
where a
John
Powell was noted as lodger in 1851 census. William Morgan lease
notes
cottage
and garden in Waun Dew near Beaufort 23 Jan 1840.
Any suggestions on where to go now? I'm open to any ideas.
