Thanks Geoff
My Thomas Williams was a school caretaker in West Hartlepool, as far as I
am aware he knew nothing about engineering of any discipline. I well
remember him trying to learn to drive a bull nosed Morris owned by my Aunt
Olive who, at that time leased a cottage on Lord Derby's stud estate near
Thirsk, N.Yorks. As a small boy I jumped into this car at every
opportunity, although more often I rode on the running board so that I
could jump off and open the numerous gates on the estate. My memory of
grandfather's efforts are that the car was rarely on the estate roads and
more often chasing the cows round the fields.

B
1861, Ebbw Vale, was an engine driver and in fact drove the machinery that
sank the pits in and around Durham. Also Yorkshire, Nottingham as well as
Wales. At least one of his children was born in Durham so maybe you should
be looking in that census. I have the 1881 census and I'll try and have a
look later in the week.
