Hi Anne
Provided your enquiry falls between the years 1804-1919, then the best place
to look initially for information would be the Welsh Newspapers Online
website, provided by The National Library of Wales:
http://newspapers.library.wales/
Try putting your ancestor's name (in "quotation marks" ) into the search box
and see what comes up. If there is nothing then try just the surname and,
afterwards, in the left-hand column on the results page, under the 'Year'
tab, tick the box or boxes for the relevant year or years - one at a time,
as the required results are selected and appear on the right-hand side of
the page. If there are still too many results, then you can narrow things
down further by also selecting the box for a particular month, under the
'Month' tab. However, I don't think using the years boxes on the initial
search page will be much help.
You can also try adding other search terms at the same time in the search
box, linked by the word AND in capitals, and a search will be made for pages
that contain all the intervening search terms on the same page. If you put
'and' in lower case then there are rather a lot of pages which will return a
positive on such a query!
Much crime was reported during this period when it came to court and
sometimes you can follow the full story through the set of hearings, to find
out the final outcome.
Otherwise, The National Archives has a helpful Research Guide for people
researching 'Prisoners or prison staff':
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/help-with-your-research/research-guide...
Here is a link to the entries which appear under Usk Gaol in The National
Archives Discovery catalogue:
http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/results/r?_q=Usk+Gaol
I hope this helps.

Subject: [BLAENAUGWENT] Courts
In tracing the family history of my wife in south Wales we found that
a
great grandfather spent time in Usk jail. What is the most practical way
of
finding what he was there for and at what court he was processed. He
lived
in Bedwellty in the 1901 census and the rest of the family were still
there
in the 1911 census.
Any advise and assistance would be much appreciated.
Best regards
Anne Alexander
