children Evan, Sarah , Mary ann, Thomas, Daniel and a Maggie.... Could this be your

Hi Sue,
Pretty much as Clive, have looked for Sarah and found the same marriage - Sarah Maddy to
James Davies (lla-249), if this is her then normally on the marriage certificate she will
be Sarah Maddy formerly ?? (maiden name) If you contact the Tredegar Registrar's
Office and give them all the info, her maiden name, father's name, dates etc., they
will check if it's your Sarah, then you can order the certificate from them. I did
this for my Grandmother who had remarried. The certificate cost £10.
I have also looked in marriages and found two possibilities for Margaret (age for marriage
at that time was 12 I think)
JFM/1872 to Richard Davies in Bedwelty
JAS/1873 to Thomas Thomas in Bedwelty.
also
Elizabeth Maddy to William Lewis JFM/1881 in Bedwelty
also
Thomas to Rachel Long JFM/1881 in Bedwelty
Thomas to Ann Jones AMJ/1886 in Brecknock
There's also the William Maddy who is Lodger with the family in 1871 in Park Row
Cottage, Bedwelty, maybe a member of larger Maddy family, or brother to Evan?
Good luck - Gwen

Hi Sue
I've also checked for deaths of a Sarah Maddy from March 1871 - December
1946 - when she would have been 110, if still alive, given the year you have
for her birth, 1836, is correct. The only two such deaths are the one found
by Gwen, plus an 83 year old Sarah Maddy, who died in Sunderland, registered
in the June quarter 1907.
So, it would appear that she must have died abroad or remarried.
The marriage which seems most likely is:
DEC 1904 Sarah Maddy Bedwellty 11a 249
+ James Davies or Rees Price
It could well be worth looking for the church record here. Don't forget that
provided the bride and groom can write, the church's copy of a marriage
certificate will contain the couple's actual signatures - which can be
matched up with previous signatures to help confirm whether you have the
same person or not. The bride's age at marriage may also be provided,
although not always . . . The address(es) given at the time of the marriage
may also be significant.
There is also a birth of a Sarah Maddy which I think would be worth
checking, to see whether her mother was called Sarah Maddy:
JUN 1884 Sarah Maddy Pontypridd 11a 448
If the couple had separated then it wouldn't be unheard of for the husband
to state to the census enumerator that he was a widower. Alternatively, the
person who reported Evan Maddy's death may not have realised that his
estranged wife was still alive.
However, in this instance, after much checking every which way I don't think
Sarah or Thomas Maddy are included in the 1881 Census, as transcribed by
Family Search/Ancestry. It would be worth trying Find My Past, which has a
different transcription of the census, if you have a subscription. In which
case, the Evan Maddy, aged 44, in Back Union Street, Bedwellty, a widower,
is probably the wrong person. NB 44 + 7 = 51, not 55, in 1888.
Best regards
Clive

-Same here Sue, have looked on FMP and Ancestry and Family Search, the
only Sarah Maddy death I have found is an 81 year-old in O/N/D 1936 in
Brecknockshire plus in the England/Wales probate 1861-1941 she's there
Sarah of 2 Bridge Cottages, Cross Oak Talybont-on-Usk , Brecon (wife of
Evan Maddy) but he was a builder. If you say he died in 1888, it can't be
the same anyway.
Looks like it's going to be one of the mysteries of life (or death in this
case) ;-)
Sorry can't be of more help
best wishes Gwen
