Hi Huw
I promised that either I or my contact would get back to you, if we could
help in any way with your enquiry.
Well, I've now received a reply through the post in the form of a
reminiscence, which Brian has kindly asked me to relay to you:
MEMORIES OF SCOUTING IN EBBW VALE AND TREDEGAR, DURING THE 1940s
We moved to Ebbw Vale in April 1942 and I was my last term in school there.
This is when I must have walked to Tredegar over the mountain. I was busy at
university from September and spent what time I had with the 6th Ebbw Vale
Scouts. I was told about the Hostel scout troop and went there once, but did
not see their troop in action. The hostel was in old buildings, run by a
youngish High Anglican priest in a black cassock, referred to by the boys as
"Father". It seemed like a teen-age reformatory for boys, all resident, and
I thought it an odd establishment, introspective and isolated. I knew no
name. Perhaps The Scout Association (HQ now in Gilwell Park) have old
records of the troop?

Well, I hope this helps a little - especially with the reference to The
Scout Association.
Here is the web address for The Scout Association:
http://scouts.org.uk/
If you wish to send an enquiry by e-mail: info.centre(a)scouts.org.uk
And, finally, the postal address:
Scout Information Centre, Gilwell Park, Chingford, London, E4 7QW.
Best regards

Hi Huw
I've written a note to someone I know who was in the scouts and living at
Ebbw Vale during the early 1940s - to go in the post 1st class tomorrow. I
can't hold out whether he'll know about scoutmasters in Tredegar in 1942,
but he may still have some records for this period. If anything transpires
either he or I will be back in touch within a few days.
Best regards

Subject: [BLAENAUGWENT] Hostel of the Good Shepherd
Hoping someone can help? My father was a Boy Scout in Tredegar which I
believe was held in the the Hostel of the Good Shepherd. I am looking for
information on the person who was in charge. The approximate date I have
is 1942? I believe this person to be a man of the Church and went on to
Monte Carlo in the 1960's - 1970's.Any information, Huw.
