Hello Listers,
It's taken me a long time and many deadends to consider the possibility that
my 'Welsh' ancestry may have consisted of one generation - my
3xGrtGrandmother, SARAH
WATERS. Sarah's death cert in Australia stated she was born in Abergavenny,
Father - JOHN WATERS, Farmer. Mother's name was stated as Martha, but could
be an error by informant. Sarah was born about 1815; she is not on the
Abergavenny Parish Registers, but Aberystruth is in the upper division of
the hundred of Abergavenny, so I believe the story lies there, considering
all the migrant workers attracted to the area by the Iron Ore and Coal.
I did find the death of a JOHN WATERS in Brynmawr in 1826, aged 33yrs - he
was buried at Llanelly. I have no further information but he fits the
picture.
SARAH WATERS was tried in Brecon in 1832, records show that she was 16yrs
old and a Farm Servant, late of parish of St. Michael Cwmdu; tried again in
1832 when she was 17yrs old - late of parish of St.Michael Cathedine. She is
not on Parish Registers of either For a second offence (goods valued at 3/-)
Sarah was transported to Van Diemen's Land in 1833 for 7 years, but like
most convicts, never saw her homeland again.
I desperately hope that somebody with access to Parish Registers might find
a baptism for Sarah, perhaps even a marriage for JOHN WATERS (although could
have married outside Wales) even deaths for John & 'Martha', or any further
information on the Brynmawr death mentioned. Would there be Company records
for Ironworkers/Miners?
Apologies if this was a bit long, thank you for reading it. Any help
sincerely appreciated.
Kind regards,
Dawn(Tasmania)
