Hello,
My name is Brinley Amos and I live in Pennsylvania. I have been researching
the family history and came across a change in the surname. My great great
grandfather's name was William Amos. He and his family show up in the 1881
Wales census at 42 High St., Tredegar, Bedwellty.
In the 1871 census, it seems the same family had the surname of Hammonds. A
friend once told me that name changes weren't that uncommon back then in
Wales but I'm not sure I agree or understand.
Is there any way you can help me verify this name change and perhaps then I
can continue my research.
Thank You very much for all your help and I look forward to your reply

If the change of name was only on one census, and you are absolutely sure that all the
individuals' details tie up, then it may simply have been that the enumerator
mis-heard the name of the family or simply mis-transcribed it when he copied it down from
one sheet to another - he may not have been able to read his own handwriting.
