Hi,
The fact that it's a family bible does not mean that it was owned by the parents and
the event was recorded at the time of birth. Many people buy bibles and record in them
all they know about the family because it is a good place to do it. Pieces of paper get
misplaced or thrown out. My own mother did this in the 1960's when I was in high
school. She put in what she "thought" were the dates for her parents, aunts and
uncles and grandparents. Some were correct others were not. Does it say who was the
original owner of the bible? If it was his mother or father, then they probably recored
it correctly. Otherwise, who knows.

Thanks to the helpful replies that I received after my
first inquiry. It seems that my great find has led me
to another tall brick wall - at least until I understand how
to research in Wales better. I have another
question. I just received a birth certificate for my
ancestor, David Davies, son of William Davies and Elizabeth
Lewis. The family bible indicates that he was born on
March 7, 1851 on Coedcae, Garnfach, Nantyglo, Wales, and I
have been searching for some time for a birth
certificate. I finally found, I think, the one I've
been looking for, but the birth date is off. I had
already come to the conclusion that he was born in 1848
instead of 1851, so it was no surprise to find the
certificate showed he was born in that year, but his
birthdate is listed as Jul 27, 1848, instead of March
7th. The certificate also states that he was born in
Blaina, Aberystruth. I think that's near Garnfach,
Nantyglo, but not sure how close. The parents match
what I expect, Willia!
m Davies, collier, and Elizabeth Lewis, but the surprises
in the birth certificate make me suspicious. Would any
of you seasoned Monmouthshire researchers like to make your
opinion known as to whether this is my man or not? I
suppose it's a possibility that the family bible may have
listed his baptism date, not his birth date. Thanks for
listening!
