Hi Jane,
Many thanks for the information about the Jellys currently living in Blaina.
They could well be related, but without the knowledge of their given names
I am unable to chase them :o)
Perhaps someone else may be able to assist me with this information?
Best wishes,
Tony

Hi Les,
Can't see a connection to either of my Bowen connections but will keep your
mail. I have a James Bowen born at Nantyglo in 1835 and a Charles Bowen born
at Clydach Iron Works in 1856. They don't seem to connect to each other
either.
Cheers Delphine in Brisbane.

Hi Les
Many thanks for your reply.
All my CHIVERS research up to now has been in Somerset.
The reason for my request is that I have finally found the marriage of my
2xG Grandparent, who lived in Somerset, at Pontypool, Mon and thought there must
be some reason why they would move to Pontypool to marry and return to
Somerset. Did they stay with relatives I don't know about ?
So I don't know if your CHIVERS fit in with mine yet but will keep them on
file and if I find a link I will contact you again.
Regards
Peter
Dear Listers,
This week's 'Retrospective Images of Wales' webpages, uploaded this morning
onto my website, feature the following subjects:
1. The life of Sir William Nott and his links with the town of Carmarthen
(fourteen pictures). This two-page feature was first shown on my website in
July 2004.
2. The seaside resort of Tywyn (Towyn) in the county of Merionethshire, and
its connection with the Talyllyn narrow-gauge steam railway (twenty-two
pictures). This two-page feature was first shown on my website in March
2002, but the photographs date back to the 1960s.
As usual, these webpages will be on display until next Saturday.
'Retrospective Images of Wales' is at its new location

Hi Jenny
Thanks for your reply.
No I don't have a first name .
I have been looking for some time for the marriage of my 2x Grandparents
Benjamin CULLEN & Martha CHIVERS both born in the Coleford area of Somerset. By
pure luck I finally found it at Pontypool. One was living at Talywaun and the
other at Garndiffaith. I then wondered why they should choose to travel to
Pontypool from Somerset to get married and were they staying with relatives I
did not know of.
So I'm mainly interested in any CHIVERS or CULLEN in the Pontypool area at
the time of the 1851 census who came from the Coleford area of Somerset
If you are able to find one I would appreciate a transcript of the whole
family please.
Regards
Peter
Hi List
May I request an 1851 census lookup please for the Pontypool / Blaenavon
area.
I'm trying to locate a CULLEN or CHIVERS family in this area whose Head was
born in Somerset (Kilmersdon, Ashwick or Stoke Lane areas)
Any help received with gratitude
Regards
Peter
Hi Jim
Blaina is a town in the north of Gwent (formerly Monmouthshire). It is one
of the towns, together with Abertillery, Nantyglo, Brynmawr & Ebbw Vale, that
make up the relatively new Blaenau Gwent County Borough.
regards
Peter
Hello Delphine
Sorry but my Bowens seem to be different ones - my connection is David BOWEN born Aberystruth c1869, son of John BOWEN born c1841 and his wife Ann (maiden name unknown).
Best of luck with your research.
Jane.

Jane, noticed that you had BOWEN listed in your names.
I have 2 families of that name with not much known as they married into different parts of my direct line. Do either of these sound like yours?.
1 Charles BOWEN, bc 1856 Clydach Iron Works married Jane CHILTON. Have one line of these descendants down to present day.
2 A Mr BOWEN (Christian name unknown ) who married Martha BEVAN and had children John bc 1854, Edwin bc 1864 and Elizabeth bc 1869. John & Edwin were living at Nantyglo in 1901.There may also have been more children in the family.

Subject: Fw: Re[4]: [BLAENAUGWENT] My BlaenauGwent connection :o)
Hi Tony
Well, the case really is there in The Cambrian or General Weekly Advertiser for the Principality of Wales, No. 1942, Swansea, Saturday, April 10, 1841 and it is written up in quite some detail, under the heading 'MONMOUTHSHIRE ASSIZES' (p.4, c.2).
Clearly, the spelling for William's surname is not quite the same as you gave in your original e-mail - Jelley - but the match points in terms of the area where the events took place and 'Jelly's' age at the time may well actually prove the connection with your ancestor...
For now, without further prevarication, here is a transcription of the full text of the trial proceedings:-
"Richard Edwards, aged 28, and William Jelly, aged 21, were charged with obtaining under false pretences, an order on the Abergavenny Post-office for the sum of £3 18s 6d, with intent to defraud Richard Hayward, of Blaenavon Works. There were about twenty different counts in the indictment varying the charge.- It was proved that an order for the above sum, payable to Richard Hayward, Blaenavon, was obtained of the postmaster of Wellington, Shropshire, by Mrs. Wakley, of Trench-lane, and that her daughter directed the letter, containing the order, to Richard Hayward, and the same was put into the Shiffnal post-office.- Wm. Lewis, of the Company's Shop, Blaenavon, deposed that a letter came to the shop directed for Richard Edwards, who opened it, and afterwards returned it, saying it did not belong to him; in a day or two afterwards the prisoner, Jelly, called at the shop, saying, "There is a letter here for Richard Edwards, he expects it from Wellington, with money in it from!
his mother." Witness gave the letter to Jelly.- Mr. D. Thomas, assistant at the Abergavenny post-office, deposed that the prisoner, Edwards, brought an order to him for £3 18s 6d; he referred to the book in which he entered letters of advice, and found that it was an order granted by the Wellington postmaster, payable to Richard Hayward; he asked prisoner if his name was Richard Hayward; he replied it was; he then requested prisoner to write his name on the back of it; he could not write but made his mark beneath the words, "the mark of Richard Hayward," and witness attested the same in writing underneath; witness paid prisoner Edwards, the money, and he took it away. Jelly said in his defence that he merely conveyed the letter to Edwards, as he had occasion to call at the shop for a letter for himself. Both prisoners received a good character.- Mr. Godson contended that the felony had not been made out; only the false pretence.- His Lordship was of opinion that the felony!
was proved. Guilty-To be imprisoned for six months."
The next case involved two girls - one of whom, Ann Griffiths, aged 19, was acquitted - and Margaret Michael, aged 16, was found guilty of the theft from Samuel Birch of a gold watch, a gold chain, two seals, one key, one silk handkerchief, one eye glass, one pocket comb, one silver pencil case, one pocket knife and three sovereigns. Margaret's sentence was one year's imprisonment. However, her two associates, Elias Kendal, aged 26, and Frederick Abel, aged 18, who received the articles the next day, knowing them to be stolen, were less fortunate. Abel was found not guilty but Kendal was sentenced to be transported for 14 years.
Some other cases of burglary also attracted sentences of transportation: 15 years - James Whitby, aged 21 and Henry Whitby, aged 16; and 14 years - George Upwards, aged 24.
So, not quite the Chartist uprising cause that I had at first imagined, bearing in mind the proximity of November 1839! Without the Swansea index to The Cambrian, which Pam Thornbury spotted, then it would have taken a lot of work to track this entry down. It would be worth thanking her for her help given the connection with your ancestor is proved.
Coalbrook Vale is located in the next major valley to the west from the Afon Lwyd valley, at the head of which Blaenavon and its ironworks are situated.
The 1841 Census took place on 6th June 1841 and so William Jelly would have been about 1/3 of the way through his sentence at the time. Please let me know if his age fits with your ancestor.
Best regards
Clive

Hello Barry,
Thank you, I should have remembered that. I noticed the change from
Abergavenny to Bedwelty while looking for Rhymney in the various census,
but must have had a mental block.

Does anyone on the list have a site address for information on the mine
disaster that occured at the mine in Wexham. I am particularly trying to find the
name of the individual that wrote the Miners Prayer after the disaster.
