Hello Everyone,
May I pick your brains with some questions about Removal Orders and the Poor Law?
I've discovered that my family was subject to a Removal Order in the 1830s.
I wonder , could anyone enlighten me about what a Removal Order was, please? I suspect it may be related to the Poor Law and the return of people to their home parish for assistance but would appreciate any information.
Also, can anyone answer this question? How was it determined to which parish an individual belonged? If it depended upon where a person is born would their place of birth have to be proved by a note of a baptism in a parish register (I'm concerned with the period around 1800, pre BMD indices). I can't find my ancestors listed as being baptised in the parish register of the place to which they were Removed. Might I assume they were non-conformists or had no religion at all?
Any thoughts or suggestions will be gratefully received!
Anne

I remembered that I promised to send you this information
The Book is
Hughesovka...a Welsh Enterprise in Imperial Russia
published and still available by the Glamorgan Record Office, 1992
It is an AMAZING account of John Hughes of Merthy Tydfil and the
establishment of his New Russia Company and the town, works and
collieries which he
established in the Ukraine. It was undertaken from 1869 thru 1917 the end
resulting from the Russian revolution. The town once called Hughesovka
is now know as
Donetsk in the Ukraine. Nikita Krushev spent his childhood in that
town. The
book documents the Hughes family's of Merthyr Tydfil and Newport, Glam
role
and the fortune they made in developing the Iron Industry of Russia at
invitation of Tsar. The families are fully discussed and listed.

I have ask :o)
Is there amongst us a kind & dedicated person that has the time to search the Blaina / Nantyglo pages for a Philip Jones born abt. 1830?
His wife's name if he was married at that time was Jane born abt. 1834 in Trevethin.

Dear all,
In this mornings Gwent Gazette it mentions the latest news regarding
Blaenau Gwent Libraries catalogue of 'over 140,000 books, DVD's and
playstation games'.
The blurb says' The new online catalogue called HIP (Horizon information
portal) will allow registered library customers to check their records,
renew items and place requests from home. The catalogue also provides
access to a range of electronic reference resources, such as
Encyclopaedia Britannica and Oxford Reference online.
The link is:- http://www.blaenau-gwent.gov.uk/library.htm
Just click on online catalogue.
I typed in ' the Hay poisoner', a book which I have on loan myself and
yes.... the book was shown as out on loan.
My own interests in the 'Hay Poisoner' (Herbert Rowse Armstrong, hanged
at Gloucester on 31st May 1922) lie in the fact that Armstrongs had
joined Arthur Cheese's solicitors firm in 1906. When Arthur died just
before WW1 Armstrong took over the practice, assisted by Arthur Cheese's
nephew.
My 3x great grandfather Lewis Cheese (b 1831) came to Brynmawr between
1861 and 1871 from Clodock, Herefordshire, after his wife Elizabeth, had
died earlier. Other Cheese families belonging to him, generations apart,
also settled in Brynmawr between 1861 and 1881.
My father and uncle told me that the Cheese solicitor family at
Hay-on-Wye were related to Lewis Cheese. I have no proof so far. Maybe
one day I'll find a link.
Best regards

Hello All,
This Thursday (8th September) resumes our first research evening at
Ebbw Vale (Beaufort) since July as we had our usual August break.
Of course we represent Blaenau Gwent; Ebbw Vale, Tredegar, Nantyglo,
Blaina, Abertillery, Cwmtillery and lots of grey areas, Llanelly,
Llangattock (Llangattwg), Llangunider ( Llangynidr) as well.
All visitors and members are welcome. Great aunt Thurza Fettlebridge
('nee Brown), 97 next birthday still helps with the refreshments. She
loves all the gossip and since her husband died in 1947 has dedicated
herself to modern science. Has even donated her bodily organs to them.
What a lady!
In July we had Don Hughes, from Florida visit us at Ebbw Vale. His
interests were in Cwm, near Ebbw Vale. Don was touting for the Cwm Male
voice choir to appear at their recent Gymanfa Ganu at Orlando.
This is what Don wrote to me last week:-
I'm sure you felt a tingling happy feeling last night! (Saturday
September 3rd).
The hundreds of Welsh at the Gymanfa Ganu here in Orlando met around a
grand piano in the lobby of the Contemporary and started to sing..no
schedule, no agenda, just raised their voices, the sound was glorious
and so powerful not only did the hotel rock but I'm sure seismographs in
this part of FLORIDA reported the event.
My heart also reported the event, such a reminder of the music and love
that has touched me and our family thru song and music thru our WELSH
HERITAGE...Sanctus, Diadem, Cwm Rhonda...all of the music with such
powerful voices..high sopranos, deep basses ....glorious altos and of
course the MIGHTY BARITONES for which I contributed my all!. So much so
that this morning I have little or no voice...and we have the official
Gymanfa Ganu singing all afternoon!...if you feel the ground moving this
afternoon...that's just the WELSH celebrating in Florida.
Don Hughes....Sunday Sept 4, 2005
best regards

Keep in mind that all posts are kept in a permanent archive. Off topic
posts use up valuable server space. But more importantly they make it
hard for future researchers to the archives.
Imagine that it is sometime in the future and you are a newbie searching
this lists archive. Wading through off topic posts are both frustrating
and a waste of time.
Rootsweb does have mailing lists that allow discussions other than
genealogy please use one of them.

Hello from Ottawa Canada.
The same thing has happened here in Canada, Prices this week have
skyrocketed from $1.03 to $1.31. per litre.
We have also tried sending e-mail messages "Don't buy gas for a year from
..Shell, Esso, etc. " but it has NOT worked and we are just as frustrated as
you are regarding gasoline prices.
Regarding genealogy, I'm searching for the surname COCKLIN in Abertillery.
