Hi Everyone
Does anyone have OVERTONs in their Family Tree ?
I have been trying to find a baptism for Catherine OVERTON for some time.
She was born c.1835 at Penygarn Fach, Nantyglo, Mon then moved to Brynmawr.
Gwent Record Office have been unable to help but did find baptisms for two of
her sisters at Aberystruth which I feel indicates that she was also probably
baptised - but where ?
She went to Somerset as a domestic servant where she met her husband Isaac
JAMES (bn Vobster). They returned to Brynmawr to marry and returned again later
to live in Cwmcelyn. One of their daughters, Martha, married a SPERRING
Any help would be appreciated

Peter
Dear Everyone
This is my first time of posting to the list. I have a marriage between
Margerat SHEEHY who may have been from Tipperary and Patrick GRANT. The marriage
took place in St Marys Chapel Tredgar Road Ebbw Vale in the district of
Bedwelty on the 26th March 197
Patrick was aged 36 years an Iron Works Labourer and Margerat Sheehy aged 28
years. He lived at 22 Top Row Newtown Ebbw Vale and she lived next door at
Number 23. His father was James Grant (deceased) Occupation Fisherman and her
father was John Sheehy Grocer. They were married at the chapel by an R C
priest
Now here comes the rub I need to find if they had children. Oral tradition
says that they did not have any children but another relatives thinks that they
had three children. I have searched 1837 online but cannot find any
children. I found a clutch of Grant children just after 1907 ordered the certs but
none proved correct - very frustrating
It is believed that Margerat was still alive in 1945 but that is the last
anyone knows of her. I was wondering if I could find the death cert of Margerat
would it give as an informant a grownup child. Of course they may not have
continued to live in Wales after the marriage, now that would further
complicate matters for me
Sorry for the length of this but I VERY MUCH appreciate any help, thoughts
and suggestions on this one. It is my first time of searching in Wales.
Thank You
Veronica

Thanks for this, Peter. However, although I will contact them, I understood records offices are not able/willing to look up such details, especially as I'm not absolutely sure of the date, and I hoped someone out there might have access to this information through some other route. Gwent FHS don't have a record of the marriage although I'm told it's mentioned in the Oxford Biographical Dictionary or DNB (as "about 1830") as Evan Evans was an author.

Mary

Hi all,
Well I had a brilliant night at the Mount Pleasant Pub in abertillery
listening to the entertainer Rob Allen, and had the great pleasure of
spending some time with Barrie and Brenda Jones. Rob is welsh and sung a few
songs about Wales. Before anyone says this is not to do with genealogy, I
traced Rob's family line back to thomas allen in slough in 1798, and gave
him the printed details for his anniversary last year. He was fascinated!
Hoping everyone had a lovely evening too, regards to all,
Jon

Dear Mary
There were several Hutchings families in the area including 2 in tredegar.
They came variously from Somerset and Devon but do not appear to be
obviously related to each other.

hi Jon
Misread your prior post.
I have scrolled through the relevant enumeration
districts in 61 and 71 and could find no mentiom of the Mount.
At the end of the ED in 1861 is a note saying that the Baptist chapel was
established in 1715 and rebuilt in 1839.
Keith
Thanks Keith, yep, as I said in my previous email, I have the innkeepers of
the Mount Pleasant in 1881 and 1901, but am looking to find the 1891 census
entry, and to find out if the Mount Pleasant was in existence before 1881,
eg, 1871, or whether George Gingle was maybe the first innkeeper?
Does anyone have access to an 1891 Kellys for Monmouthshire that could give
the name of the Innkeeper that year by any chance??
regards to all, Jon

Hi everyone
Is there anyone on the list that knows either roughly or the exact year that
the Mount Pleasant Inn (Hotel/Tavern) was built in Abertillery? I know it
was in existence before the particular part of Alma Street that it now comes
under. I believe it used to be part of Hill Street. this isn't the Hill
Street at the lower end of town, but Hill Street on the western side of the
Cwmtillery valley. I was talking to the landlord and landlady last night,
who are interested in the history of the building. I have the censuses of
1881 and 1901, but as yet have not managed to locate the public house in
1891. Does anyone know if it was in existence pre 1881? any info
gratefully recieved.
Regards to all, Jon

Hi listers,
Can anyone help with a lookup in 1841 and/or 1851 of the following family
please? The details found below are from the 1861 census of Aberystruth:
William Edwards Head b1800 (61) Aberystruth
Onesimus Edwards Son b1836 (25) aberystruth
Henry Edwards son b1847 (14) aberystruth
In 1841 and 1851 there should also be another son, William, who according to
the 1881 census was born about 1840 at Abertillery.
Any help would be very much appreciated. Regards to all,
Jon

Dear Jon,
My guess is Cwmtillery since Upper levels comes next to Dyffryn Row on the
1881 census and there are a number of levels marked on the os map. Have a
look at Cwmtillery on "old maps"

Dear Barry,
thanks for your reply. I'm ashamed to say I neglected to look at
neighbouring households, the obvious move to make! Duffryn Row is almost
directly across from me on the eastern side of the Tyleri valley, I've been
up that area a number of times. I'm not sure if my memory is playing tricks,
but I seem to recall there was a small row of houses right at the top end
when I was young, sort of early 70s, but they were derelict to say the
least. I wonder if that was Upper Levels?
thanks again, Jon
