I saw your email re your problems with finding Frederick Ernest Smith. I'm
not related to you. However, its possible that Frederick might not have been
his first name. He might have gone by the name of Ernest. A friend of mine
had this happen to her. She could not find her own grandfather. She looked for
years. Finally, she got a researcher in South Wales to hunt for him. His
name was Thomas Edward Raines. When the researcher found the records, he was
listed as Edward Thomas Raines.
Good luck, Annie

Hi Barbara,
Thank you for the kind reply to my request, I do appreciate it.
The information received from you is that of my grandfather provided by me
to the Commonwealth War Graves. Unfortunately I have mailed it to them
before receiving the information on Frederick from Bunwell who died in 1904.
All the info on my grandfather regarding WW1 are correct, the age is
incorrect as well as the information on the family.
My grandmother was Margaret Smith, they had two sons named Ernest Alfred and
Frederick Ernest.
(I would suggest that your next step would be to obtain his
service records from the South African Infantry if possible).
I have received all the information on my grandfather from the South African
National Defence Force, unfortunately only the very bare answers were given
on filled in on the attestation forms.
I need to find a Frederick with a second name of Ernest to continue my
search.
Hopefully I will be able to make contact with descendants of Alfred and
Annie and that they will be able to provide me with information
I remember my cousin telling me that the family have been involved in a
bakery named Stone Bakery.
I don't know if one could establish any thing from that little bit of info.
Thank you once again Barbara,
I am looking forward hearing from you,
Enjoy a wonderful day,
Karin.
Good day List,
I am new to this mailing list - I really trust that somebody will be able to
help me.
If this email overlaps other mailing lists please forgive me but I am in
desperate need of help.
I have been doing research on my grandfather for nine years just to find
that the man I have been doing research on died in 1904.
I have all the prove that he did indeed died.
My grandfather fought in the Boer-War and while the British soldiers raged
the farms Frederick Ernest Smith fell in love with my grandmother.
He went back to England and once again came back to SA and they got married
in 1911.
My grandfather fought in WW1 and died in Tanzania, East Africa the 13th of
October 1916. It was said that my grandmother died with him. She never
spoke about him, I received the information that I have on him from the
South African National Defence Force. I have appointed a researcher in
London to help me with a search on him at the PRO regarding the Boer-War. I
did receive all that I needed - but - unfortunately it was the information
on the man who died in 1904.
A few weeks ago, at the archives in Pretoria I came across my grandparents
will and with that a death notice for Frederick, filed with the will. I
think that was just pure luck that I have found the death notice.
The names of his parents Alfred and Annie Smith are only mentioned on the
death notice, no where else. I don't have a date of birth for him, on the
death notice it states that Frederick was thirty years and twenty nine days
old when he died.
My father use to tell us that his dad's family are from Wales but that FES
was born in Durban SA.
I don't know if his family lived in SA for a period of time. Apparently the
name Stone is of significance in my search.
My grandmother use to say that what ever we want to know is in a safe
keeping box and we will someday have the answers to all our questions.
While dying in hospital her apartment was burgled and all was lost.
Please if you can help me in anyway I will really appreciate it.
Looking forward hearing from you,
Enjoy a wonderful day,
Karin Serfontein nee Smith.
