Dear List,
My latest findings in relation to the HENRY family of Merthyr/Dowlais have led me back over the border to Beaufort/Aberystruth. Richard HENRY of Dowlais had a son Thomas and a daughter Cecilia amongst his brood. Thomas HENRY married Sarah PHILLIPS in Aberystruth in 1825 and had numerous children baptised there in the 1820s and 1830s. The parish registers show that he was Innkeeper of the Rhydyblew in Beaufort which is interesting as Thomas' father Richard was also an Innkeeper. Thomas HENRY's sister Cecilia married Thomas BEVAN in Merthyr in 1837 and they were also connected to the Rhydyblew, I am told that Thomas (widower) was there at the time of the 1851 census and that their daughter Maria was born there in 1843. Maria married a John CLEMENTS in 1864 and had a daughter Mary Charlotte who has living descendants. I would be very interested in expanding on the BEVAN connection with the Rhydyblew.
Best wishes
James Phillips-Evans
Cheers for that Barrie, didn't think of looking at it in that light. Will go
back and see what else I can sift out of what I've got.

Hello all,
For the purposes of this mailing list, please send your thank you
messages to the person you wish to thank privately at their personal
email address.
This mailing list has a large enough membership that clogging up
mailboxes with thank you messages can be rather annoying.
My thanks to all,
Joan Asche
List Admin.
on the marriage certificate I have from Bedwellty and Siloh around 1850 two
of the participants...father and the groom showed an X because they did not
write ...the x indicated their 'mark"...I am sure of that...not having to do
with who filled out the form because that person indicated they signed by
mark...
Thanks to all who replied to my enquiry regarding the meaning of the
word 'Diaidelwyd' in the Hermon Baptist chapel records. It looks as if
it refers to the 'Transfers' of members from the chapel to other
chapels or places.

Hi Keith,
Thanks for sharing the information about the Times Digital Archives. This is
a wonderful resource for genealogists and historians. I’ve pulled several
interesting articles regarding Brynmawr, the topics of which have already
been subjects of discussion over on Brynmawr Scene.
Thanks again!
Jeff
Hi
Can anybody tell me what an "X" means in the space where a Father's name
should be on a marriage certificate?
I have been told it may mean he doesn't know who his father was .........any
help appreciated

Dear All,
Rosemary Lockie, the Genuki administrator for Monmouthshire has now
added links to Abertillery (Aberystruth Parish):-
http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/MON/parishes.html#A
Also Cwmtillery:-
http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/MON/parishes.html#C
As I mentioned earlier, Genuki is definitely the best resource that we
have for UK genealogy and it is up to us all to challenge anything we
find is missing or incorrect.
Our listers can add to Genuki, i.e. Pubs in Abertillery/Cwmtillery and
the list can then refer to the links that they have provided.
best regards
Barrie Jones, Gwent
Hello All,
John Ball, the Genuki administrator for Breconshire, has amended
Beaufort, Breconshire (part Monmouthshire) which is under
Llangatwg/Llangattock.
John has inherited this area of Breconshire from Gareth Hicks and
Rosemary Lockie who commendably set up the county originally. As we know
the County and Parishes are not straightforward:)
It is up to us all to question what we believe is correct. John's track
record speaks for itself and suffice to say he is 100% committed to what
he does in genealogy and of course photography and of course our area.
(see below his website and contact)
Anyway, John has added links to Beaufort (Llangatwg/Llangatock)
see:- http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/BRE/Llangatwg/index.html
My 1871 census of Pubs, etc. in Beaufort is:-
http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/BRE/Llangatwg/Beaufort.html
Beaufort is mainly Breconshire (part Monmouthshire) and John has
requested that Rosemary Lockie, the Monmouthshire Genuki administrator,
to add a link from that county.
Also, Brynmawr, which for most part was Llanelly (Breconshire), part
Llangatwg/Llangattock (confusing!) has been redressed by John's link:-
http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/BRE/Llanelli/index.html
See also the Brynmawr 1909 Description of Brynmawr extracted from The
History of Brecknockshire, Theophilus Jones which may give you an
understanding of Breconshire at that time:-
http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/BRE/Llanelli/Brynmawr.html
I would like to clarify some of these confusing boundaries and with the
help of people like Rodger (sic) Burchell our local expert it will be
certainly possible. Keep you posted!
Many of you will know of John Ball for his postings on the lists, mainly
photographs but much, much more!
This is John's contact as I'm sure you have all come across at some
time:-

Hello all,
I have been lurking on the list for some time but this is my first posting.
I am looking for any information on Walter MORGAN and Mary LODGE, my
paternal GG parents.
This is what I know about them:
Walter Morgan was born about 1820, Crickhowell, Brecon, father Henry
Morgan, farmer (from Walter's marriage certificate). Married Mary Lodge 8
November 1848, Rehoboth Chapel, Crickhowell.
Mary was born 4 September 1818 (date from family bible) at Clytha, Mon.,
father Richard Lodge, mother Elizabeth (from family bible).
Two children that I know of: Henry Walter Morgan, b 17 May 1851 at
Glamorgan Street, Brynmawr, Llanelly, Brecon, and Isaac Lodge Morgan, (my
grandfather) b 15 December 1855 at Tunnel Terrace, Newport St Woolos,
Monmouthshire
1841 census: Glamorgan Street, Brynmawr, Parish of Llanelly; Henry Morgan,
age 65, occupation independent, b Brecon; Martha Morgan, age 75, b Brecon;
Walter Morgan, age 15, b Brecon. Is this Walter with grandparents?
1851 Breconshire Census: MORGAN Walter, h, m, 30, builder +, BRE
Crickhowell, Glamorgan Street, MORGAN Mary, w, m, 32, MON Llanddewi,
Glamorgan Street.
1871 census: 1 Glamorgan Street, Brynmawr, Llanelly, Walter Morgan, age 51,

1881 census: Llanover Road, Upper Llanover, Mon; Walter Morgan, age 55;
wife Mary, 45, b Clytha, Glam; visitor Frances Stead, 41, unmarried
1891 census: 41 New William Street, Blaenavon, Mon. Walter Morgan, head,

56, b Clytha, Mon, Isaac L. Morgan, son, 35, secretary, Gas Co., b Newport,
Mon., William T. Morgan, grandson, 16, b Brynmawr, Breconshire
1901 census: 1 New William Street, Blaenavon, Mon. Isaac L. Morgan, head,
45, Builder and Undertaker, b. Newport, Mon., Sarah A. Morgan, 35, wife, b.
Nantyglo;
Thos. W. Morgan (my father) 9 months, son, b. Blaenavon; Walter Morgan, 81,
father, widower, retired builder and undertaker, b. Crickhowell, Brecnock.
I have searched the GRO fiche three times, from 1900 - 1920, but have not
found a death certificate for Walter, nor have I found an obituary or
notice of his death in local papers in the newspaper library at Colindale
(I have 4 death certificates for other Walter Morgans!).
Any information on Walter or Mary's family would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
David
Frankie, I do know that the Six Bells Hotel in Six Bells is still there, looks much the same as it always has, I believe.
My grandparents, William and Mary Llewellyn used to live just round the corner (Brown's Corner, I believe) in Bridge Street.

Hello Jon, Pat and Wendy
After having a break from family history for about six months, I've come
back to the lists and have found you're all discussing various places and
people in Abertillery.
My grandparents, George and Mary Ann Morgan(nee Harvey) kept The Crown Inn.
Blaenau Gwent from some point until about 1914. The Harvey family who were
descended from the Evans family mentioned by Pat also had several pubs in
Abertillery.
Harveys and Evans came from North Somerset, as did your Purnells, Wendy.
Do you live in Abertillery Jon? I have Llewellyn family there and James,
too.
I will contact you Pat, regarding Windmill family I've just picked up
messages re. this on the B & S list.

Good morning folks,
Has anyone tried looking at the uk villages website?
http://www.ukvillages.co.uk
I was just searching the net for old maps of Cwmtillery, when in the results
was uk villages' page on Cwmtillery.
I decided to have a look around, and unless my text reader is not reading it
properly, or I had more to drink last night than I thought, I found out some
interesting news about schools in this area.
For example, did you know that Stonehouse School is just 0.2 miles out of
Cwmtillery?
Or Saint Sampson's school is 1.7 miles away?
Or maybe Ballakermeen High school, only 1.7 miles away?
What you may not be aware of is:
Stonehouse school is in Leyland, Lancashire
Saint Sampson's school is on guernsey in the channel Islands
and Ballakermeen High School is on the Isle of Mann
Even local schools are closer than we thought, such as the Blaenavon
Hillside Nursery, only 3.0 miles away! If you're a crow maybe? Or walking on
foot over the mountains? Maybe 10 or 11 miles would be more precise,
considering a journey from Cwmtillery to Blaenavon would take you 0.5 miles
south to Abertillery, then 5 miles
north past Blaina and Nantyglo to Brynmawr, and then another 5 miles over
the mountain road to Blaenavon.
So if anyone is using ukvillages.co.uk to get an idea of distances in this
area, unless as I say my text reader is not reading me the correct
information, be prepared for a shock!
Right, well I think I'll nip off out to Guernsey now to do a bit of shopping
.....see you all in about an hour!
Regards, Jon
