Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
Sorry Barrie, forgot to thank the Powys FHS as well. Great to have such
societies around doing such a grand job.
By the way, when and where is the next local FHS meeting going to be held?
Can't promise to be there but would like the details just in case.
Cheers, Jon

Hi everyone,
Does anyone have easy access to the 1901 census of Brynmawr please? I'm
looking for the household details of a Louisa Daniel, born Forest Hill,
Kent, aged 21, who was in Brynmawr working as a Domestic Governess. Any info
regarding where and who she was living with would be gratefully appreciated.
This girl is quite a traveller, as she was married in Prestwich (north
Manchester) in 1905.
Thanks in advance, Jon

Hey sorry about no dates.
Thomas Jenkins died between the 1861 and the 1871. In 1861 he was a butcher on Shop Row. So is there a guess where he would be burried and were I might find that information?
Does that help?

Barrie,
How can I get hold of Charles Parry's Essay on Ebbw Vale? I have found much
of interest in the book "Ebbw Vale - the Works". It mentions a David
Williams complaining about the poor state of repair of Waunlwyd farm (a
neighbour of Tor y Crug), which was "very likely to fall down" in the mid
1820s. Perhaps it fell down, and he moved to the farm next door.
In 1869 my Williams family has been gone from Tor y Crug for more than 10
years. I think they would have been tenants rather than the owners. My great
granfather was born at "Cwmyrdderch" in 1856. I don't know if this would be
their farm, or somewhere in the general area. By1861 they had moved to Hall
St in Victoria, where most of the boys were working as puddlers. So they
went from farmers in Aberystruth to iron workers in Bedwellty - as you say,
it is only a few hundred yards across the river.

Hello Mike,
This extract is from Charles Parry's Essay on Ebbw Vale in 1869:-
Hello All,
Will be representing Gwent, Powys and Glamorgan FHS at the above event
at Rhyd-Y-Car Leisure Centre Merthyr Tydfil on Saturday 19th March 2005.
We will be manning the help desk from 10pm until 4pm.
There will also be an exhibition by the imperial War museum funded by
the Big Lottery Fund. See http:\\ theirpast-yourfuture.org.uk
There are lots of references to Monmouthshire in the exhibition as well
as Merthyr itself of course!
Dr. Caruther Watkin-Jones will be giving a lecture on "The stiff British
upper lip-and why it won us the war" Apart from this lecture we have
been advised by the organisers, " Please don't mention ze War" as a
party from Hamburg may be arriving! Intriguing. If anyone on the list
has German interests, we won't be mentioning the War.
Be there or be square!

Hi everyone,
I don't know how many have tried this, but if you go on to the ebay website,
and search for local town names, you can often get some interesting results.
for example, I just typed in Abertillery and there is a postcard on auction
of the Abertillery Post Office in 1930. You can also find other genealogical
items, such as censuses on CD etc. I've even managed to get my grubby little
mits on some items directly connected to my family dating back over 100
years. Genuine items I'm referring to! I find it fascinating to type in
local town names, as it is often surprising what you can find that will help
to enhance your knowledge of the area your family lived. More often than
not, people have photos displaying of what they are auctioning, so even if
you don't want to part with your hard earned cash, you can still see what
it looked like. Just something I thought may be worth sharing.
regards, Jon

Ireland's St. Patrick
, Was Born a Welshman
Q. is it true that St. Patrick
was not Irish?
K.P., Dublin, Ohio
A. According to Charles
Panati's book "Extraordinary Origins of Everyday Things,:' Patrick, patron
saint of Ireland, was born in the fifth century in a region
of the
Roman
, Empire that is today known as Wales. Panati says that his given
name
was not Patrick, but Maewyn, or Suceat. Most of the information about him,
says the New Encyclopaedia Britannica, comes from two short books
that he
penned, the "Confessio," a spiritual autobiography, and "Epistola," a
denunciation of the mistreatment of Irish Christians. Patrick
admitted ~n his books to having
been a heathen up to the age of
16. Scholar D.A. Binchy, speaking of the "Confessio," says, "The
moral
and spiritual greatness of the man shines through every stumbling
sentence of his 'rustic' Latin." It was in Pat
rick's 16th year that a group of Irish marauders raided his
village and
captured hundreds of
young men and women, including Patrick, and sold them into
slavery. I t
was during the six years of senritude as a sheepherder iJl Ireland
that
Patrick wrote of his increasing awareness of God.
Escaping Ireland, he entered a monastery in Gaul, where he studied with
St.
Germain, the Bishop of Auxerre. It is said that St. Germain instilled in
Patrick the desire to convert pagans to Christianity. By the time he was
appointed Ireland's second bishop, he had already adopt.ed the name
Patrick. Panati: "His imposing

and immensely winning personality aided him in winning converts and
aggravating Celtic Druid priests." Many times, Patrick was
arrested and
just as many times, he escaped. Traveling throughout Ireland,
he founded monasteries,
schools and churches. After 30 years of missionary work, Patrick
retired to County Down, where he died on March 17, in or about the year
1,461. He
is believed to be buried in Downpatrick, where a gravestoDp.
carved with
a "P" can be found.
Does have the different census for Tredegar Bedwellty Parish? Like the '41 or earlier.
I am looking for mary JONES born about 1830 +/- 2years. There is probably a million of them but I don't have tons of information. I am thinking her mom might be ann and father richard or edward or thomas. She married thomas JENKINS in 1848 so it would have to be before that.
Is that to vague?
I really could use the help!

Joan I think you've completely missed the main point here ...
It was intended to go to a member off list, not to the list.
That's why I suggested that the list be set up that when reply is hit, it
goes to the member not the group -----

Dear listers,
I have just had it brought to my attention that I broke Rootsweb rules
(*again) by including my commercial website on a post to this list.
Firstly, my website is not commercial. If it was, I'd be in deep trouble
from the DSS who pay my money to me each week.
Secondly, I was told that my website is off topic, but I hasten to add that
there is a link to a new genealogy section bringing together the details on
4 main families in this area. Besides which I think my biography falls
somewhere in to the genealogy catagory?
The main thing i want to put over though, is that the message wasn't
supposed to go to BG, but I hit reply to a message and here it ended up. It
was supposed to go to a member off list. When I rechecked my message, I
thought there was no big deal over it as I say, my FH is included on my site
anyway. Seems like I was wrong. So I apologise to the list for going off
topic and breaking rules again.
As a final thought, can we have the list changed so that if you hit reply,
it goes to the person, and not the list pleasee? It could save something
like this happening again in the future.
thanks for listening all, Regards, Jon

I am looking for a particular Williams family, living in Victoria (Ebbw
Vale) through the 19th century. Also other families that they married,
inluding Perry, Shinton and Powell.
Originally David and Elizabeth Williams of Tor y Crug Farm above Waun
Llwyd, and their children, Mary, Phillip, Ann, Henry, Elias and Enock.
they mostly worked as puddlers in the iron works.
Mike Kohnstamm
Hello Mike,
This extract is from Charles Parry's Essay on Ebbw Vale in 1869:-
"Tor y Crug This place is situated above Glan Ebwy on the side of the
mountain. Part of this land is very good corn land the other part
woody. In the year 1864 the old house with all its out houses was taken
down and a very find farmhouse with corresponding out buildings erected.
The present tenant is one Stephen Jones Contractor. Former Proprietor
Wm. Williams Esq. Of Pontnewynydd who sold it to one Richard Bevan and
he in his turn sold it to the Harfords, at present it belongs to the E.
V. Co. Ltd."
" Pen y Crug This farm is situated , part of it in Cwm Rhydderch and
part on a high bank joining Tor y Crug farm. In the year 1863 this farm
was let to one William Chilton, Contractor and a new stall, together
with additions to the house was built. It was afterwards let to Isaac
Mason Bell Vue Briery Hill, but it is now farmed by the E. V. Co.
Former Proprietor Wm. .. Esq. Who sold it to Alexander Waddington Esq.,
of whom it was purchased by the Harfords now in the possession of the
Ebbw Vale Co. Ltd."
This shows that the farms are just over the border of Bedwellty and in
Aberystruth as Cwm Rhydderch is mentioned. This is basically between
Waunllwyd and Cwm village as we know it today.
As Jon mentioned in one Email, you cross from Ebbw Vale to Aberystruth
in no time. The boundary is really the Ebbw Fawr river in this case.
best regards

Hi folks,
I was reading this afternoon some comments about the 1911 census.
Apparently
much of it is in a shocking state, with an amount missing altogether. Much
of it is rotten, damp, dog-eared etc, and it was jokingly said the National
Archives know exactly where it is by the smell? Maybe not such a joke?
Sounds grose! That's apparently the condition the census was in when it
was
delivered to the NA?? previous censuses had the enumerators books scanned
and not the schedules, but the books don't exist for the 1911 census, so
it's all down to scanning millions of sheets of rather yucky papers! No
doubt the cost is going to be extremely high again, and with the papers in
that state, well, would anyone in their right mind want to handle them? any
offers? lol. So, as i said in the subject line, "Don't hold ya breath for
the 1911 census."
Regards to all,
Jon

Jon,
The statement "You can also buy copies of my CDs," falls under the
guideline of not selling or promoting... Unfortunately, it really
doesn't matter where the money goes to.
You can certainly add a sig line to all your emails that says something
like: Visit me.... or Visit my site... the post the URL
it has the same effect as inviting others to your site.
If you wish to discuss your genealogy then please post the link to that
page only. Your visitors can always click back to your home page for
more details about you the person.
There are MANY discrete ways to get around the AUP if you contact me
first I'm sure I can give you some pointers!!!!
