Ken,
I`m afraid I can`t assist with the specific information you seek but I do
have some information that may be of interest.
My g-grandparents, William Richards and the former Mary Pugh moved from
Merthyl Tydfil, Glamorgan County, to 3rd Row, Mamhoel, Georgetown section of
Tredegar around 1859. They had been married in 1857 in Lantwit Fairdre and resided
in Treforest, County of Glamorgan.
Sometime prior to 1880 they moved to 47 Norfolk Street in Stockton-on-Tees.
Some years later they moved to Pittsburgh in the U.S. It seems quite possible
that your relatives and mine were acquainted.
I had never heard the term, Little Wales, before and presume it referred to a
large number of Welsh there, probably in the steel industry. Any information
you have on that would be appreciated.
Regards,
George Richards
Hello Ray,
Rheobeth chapel records, as photocopies, (not fiche) of the original are
held at Tredegar. The original registers are held at Gwent Records
Office. One of our Ebbw Vale Branch of Gwent Family History Society
rescued them a couple of years ago;)
Jeff Thomas has transcribed Calvary records and appear on his website:-
http://thomasgenweb.com/brynmawr.html
The only deposits of registers for Libanus (Calvanistic Methodist) at
Worcester street are at National Library of Wales and are marriages
1967-1970 and 1973-1974.
Alma street Wesleyan have deposits at Gwent R.O. Christenings 1912-1969
Orchard Street Wesleyan ditto at Gwent R.O. Christenings 1940-1970
Bailey Street Wesleyan Christenings 1843-1850 and 1852-1882. PR's at
NLW.
Some of the existing chapels still hold PR's and minute books, etc.
There is no obligation for them to deposit them at Records Office.
Brynmawr, came under the County of Breconshire prior to 1974 and some
records went to Gwent R.O. some to NLW. Powys Records Office do not hold
any chapel records, for some strange reason.
I heard something about a year back, at Gwent R.O. that records held at
NLW for Monmouthshire county will be deposited back in the records
office at Gwent. If this were true the records held at NLW and Gwent
R.O. for Monmouthshire would be sent to Powys R.O???
You could ring Gwent Records Office and ask them what PR's do they hold
for Brynmawr. The deposits to CRO vary from week to week and my list is
way out of date. R.C. records for Brynmawr are now held at Gwent CRO as
well since a year or so ago.

Thomas Howells born 7 Batty Street Tredegar 1848 - married Mary who was born in Pontlottyn Glamorgan 1852 . They left that area around 1878 with four children and moved to Stockton -on- Tees and lived in the Portrack area which was then known as Little Wales , they added to their family there, I am one of their many descendants in the north - east, I would welcome any information on Thomas & Mary before their move.
Kind Regards
Ken Howells
Hi Listers,
Can anyone help me with the burial records of the old chapel cemeteries in
Brynmawr? I am aware that the burial record of Rehobeth Chapel is on Micro
fiche at Tredegar but I am not having much luck with any of the other chapels i.e
Calvary,Zion, Libanus and possibly Bethesda. A wall was recently pulled down
at the rear of Bethesda Chapel and there is a headstone quite prominently
exposed giving rise to the thought that it once was a burial ground. It is now a
store place for Caravans.
Ray Hapgood.
Hi, I am a new to Wales research and when I saw you had Monmouthshire on
fiche, I was hoping you could help in the research of my wife's family. Here is
the data as we know it: Thomas R. Jenkins, born 1849 in Taredgur(sp?) (Mon),
Wales. Married Emma, last name unknown, born June 1851 in Newport, Wales. They
were married about 1869, location unknown. Any help would be appreciated.

Had the pleasure of a visit of a couple who came over from Norwich to
trace the Bond family this week.
Charles Bond was born in Bath, Somerset in 1854 and is shown on 1881
census in Gloucester. By mid 1880's they are in Blaina.
We had a good deal of luck as we had contacted the Blaina Municipal
Cemetery sexton and located the grave of Edgar James Bond. When we
arrived there was no headstone! The gravedigger there informed us that
Edgar was the only one in the grave. It was now raining quite heavily
and it seemed as if our initial hopes were to result in disappointment!
Just when we were about to leave the cemetery, Brenda, my wife, noticed
a few graves over of a Frederick James Bond and wife Alice. This was the
grave of Edgar James Bond's parents!
Went to Blaina Heritage centre and met Dan Morris. Dan is an old Blaina
man and volunteer at the Heritage centre. Dan has a knack of remembering
the old Blaina families. He had 2 photos of the Bond family members
1915-1945 and also one Bond who died in the second world war!
Dan said the Bond's lived at Old Dolygarn cottages, Cwmcelyn and that
the resident who lived there after them had died a few months ago. The
daughter lived in the new houses near there, once Dolygarn farm.
Old Dolygarn cottages were the most northern part of Blaina. It was
bitterly cold but the view from the cottages down the valley was
extremely spectacular!
We left the couple with local people who knew the history of the
cottages from 1953 when the Bond family left for Norwich.
They will be visiting us again in the summer! This part of Blaina is
wild and wooley. We take our Blaenau Gwent county, especially Blaina,
for granted as ex-pats are fascinated by the area. It has so much
history, of course, and certain parts are as they were in 1800's, to a
certain extent.
best regards

Family records indicate that Thomas was born January 1851 in either Tredegar
or Tregare, Monmouthshire Wales. He was listed in the 1881 British census as
living with wife Emma, daughters Nellie, Clara, Mary, Ellenor, Hannah, Lizzie
and sons Thomas Jr., and William in Middlesborough, Yorkshire England.
Emigrated to America in 1886 and settled in Leechburg Borough, Pennsylvania. Help
needed to trace Jenkins family back and then forward to present day, also, to
identify Emma's maiden name. Thanks in advance for any information. Jim
