Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
Hi listers, I have been in poor health lately and have not spent much time
on line. Over the years I have patiently gathered quite a bit of info regard
our Hapgood family. My ggg grandfather, John Hapgood, married Elizabeth Shore
in Marksbury Church, Somerset on Xmas 1813. That was the only day they could
have off to get married. Some of their children went to Australia and some to
America. Some of the Hapgoods went to North Wales. My granddfather got
married to Magaret Jones at Wrexham and then they came down to St Brides and
eventually to Brynmawr where they lived in Glamogan Street. There is so much to
tell about them and their predecessors that I did start to put it altogether.
Let me know if there is anything that I can directly help somebody with. I had
a great surprise the other day when my wife said there is some chap on the
phone for you, he says he's from Australia. It was Gavin Williamson/Hapgood. We
had quite a long chat.
Cheers for Now Ray Hapgood.
Hi
I have been following the Hapgood trail with great interest as I too
remember the Hapgood family from Brynmawr and there are some in Nantyglo and Blaina
I believe. I was in school with the sons of Ernie Hapgood from Brynmawr.
I read that you are making a visit to this area and if I can be of any help
at all, please call into BrynmawrScene Visitor & Info Centre in Bailey
Street. I have some of the old Brynmawr, Nantyglo & Blaina books in stock which
you can take a look at and also feel free to use my internet access to help
your research ... and I make a good cup of tea or coffee too! Another place
worth visiting whilst in the area is the Brynmawr& District Museum as there are
a lot of local volunteers there who know about the people of this area.
They are all little gems of information!
Have a good trip and good luck!
Regards,
Sue
Hi, It would be very interesting to know if any of them came from Ebbw
Vale.. the Hapgood I knew must be about 65 ish... short stocky with dark
hair.. Gosh I can still see his face now after all these years.. Pity I
can't remember what I did last week,, grin.. Nadine.

Hi, I am just trying hard to get over an illness and getting in a bit of a
panic as we are due to go to Blaina on the 5th November.. and as Blaina is
next door to Nantyglo I will pick up a paper and send it to you if you
like.. Or if there is anything else I could do please ask as I will help
all I can ( if I can)...
I am just hoping to goodness that I will be well enough to go... But even
if I can't make it this time I will get my cousin to send me a copy of the
local paper... So watch this space... grin...
The Name Hapgood is unusual and I am sure you will be able to find out
something... The dates don't add up to the Hapgood in my class, but
doesn't mean to say they were not related.. I can look in the phone book
to when I get there and see who I might find... I will help all I can.. I
bet my Hapgood family were going to join others already there don't you!
well could be...
As you can probably tell by this, that I no long live in Ebbw Vale, but
still have family there, and this time we supposed to be staying with an
old school pal to look after her old dog while she goes into hospital.. so
this isn't a holiday as such, so you won't be spoiling my time etc... I
will nose about and see what I come up with... That is if you would like
me to.. The friend I am staying with was married to a Nantyglo chap and
will know loads of people.. (((( When they lived in Nantyglo, they lived in
a house called Medhurst, that was in fact the old Doctors house when he was
the Dr to Crawshaw Baileys works...and it is mentioned in many local
brochures of the area....)))) thought that might have been of some interest
to you.... Best wishes Nadine
ps.. I know there is a book of photos of Old Nantyglo and Blaina..
Publishers Stewart Williams.1Trem-y-Don, Barry South Glamorgan. South
Wales.. and written by Keith Thomas... I did have a list of the books but
my brain and filing system is something to behold... grin... Might be worth
having a go on Google... bye for now
Gavin

Hello-- I am new to this list. My ancestors were only in the area for
about five years. I'm researching the family of John Kelly and Rhoda
Bowhey Kelly, who lived in or near Brynmawr from about 1859, till
about 1864. (Both were born in Clifton.) At that point, Rhoda left
John and emigrated to the US alone. She later remarried there, and
old family papers simply say that he was "unworthy" of her and she
divorced him. But I am guessing that she just left. Here's my first
question:
Was it even possible to get a divorce in Wales at that time? (They
were married at the Bristol Record Office.) And, if so, where would
I look for a record of it.
My next question is about their children. They had at least three
children in that time period, and at least two of them died while
less than fifteen months. I can't find the death for the last child,
and I can't find him in the 1871 census either. The first child died
when they were living on Boundary Street in Brynmawr. The next one
died at Kings Street in Brynmawr. The parents were Mormons at that
time-- where would these children have been buried? Thank you, Paula
Kathy
The subject of the book is the 2nd Battalion, The Monmouthshire Regiment, this is a different regiment to the 13th Welsh.
Richard Powell
As you said in your posting the three battalions of the Monmouthshire were very closely linked. For example on the 27th May 1915 the strength of the Battalions were:
1st Battalion: 11 officers and 218 other ranks
2nd Battalion 19 officers and 580 other ranks
3rd Battalion 11 officers and 250 other ranks
Due to the very low numbers left in each after the fighting at Ypres in May 1915 the three Battalions were joined together until they built up their strength.
In August 1916 the 3rd Battalion was disbanded and 200 men joined the 2nd Battalion. So a large number of men served in both battalions during the war.
Many thanks to all those that have sent a private e-mail saying they will be attending the launch.
All the best
David Nicholas

Hi Delphine, my ancestors, LEWISs came on the 2nd of December sailing, so a
good four months after yours, but I think in general the Welsh made a huge
contribution to the populations of various other countries around the world.
I know of my Welsh ancestors, along with Joseph LEWIS and his family, my
William SMITH went with his family there too in 1887 on the Jumna.
Elizabeth LEWIS was William's sister and it was she who nominated the SMITH
family. I know of a huge Welsh contingent that went to the mines of
Pennsylvania and also to several areas in Argentina and Chile and no doubt
also South Africa. Going by names, there appears to be several 'common,
Welsh' names on the passenger list. I think a copy is available from the
Archives in Brisbane as that was where my two came from courtesy of family
researcher over there in QLD. My SMITH's eventually settles in Bundaberg
and various towns and villages surrounding that city. My SMITHs are also
connected to the LONGs of that area too.

Hi Les, are you connected to the Lewis's that married into the Smith family
from Pontypool? Elizabeth married Joseph Lewis around 1873, possibly
Pontypool, then migrated to Australia on board the Highflyer in 1878.

Let's not forget Tredegar!
My grandfather, David Powell, and his two brothers joined the 1st and 3rd
Regiments but became part of the 2nd at various times as numbers of
casualties rose.
All had been killed by 1917.
It couldn't have been much of a life - working down the pit from a young age
then joining the army in 1914.
I grew up in Queen Street, just a few houses up the street from where my
grandfather and his parents had lived 50 years before. I was never told
anything about my grandfather. It wasn't until last year while trying to
find out more about my ancestors that I realised where my grandfather had
lived - it certainly brings the past to life when you find out that you
walked the sames streets and hills and probably played in the same park.

Regiment during World War One. The Battalion were mobilised for active
service on August 4th, 1914 and remained on active service in Germany with
the Army of Occupation until May, 1919. In 1914 the Battalion was very much
made up of men from Abercarn, Blaenavon, Crumlin, Cwmbran, Llanhilleth.
Monmouth, Usk and Pontypool. The book provides a valuable insight and
memorial to those who served with the Battalion and would appeal to those
with an interest in Local or Family History and The First World War. The
book is hardback, contains 120 pages and over 140 photographs.
Richard
I have only just picked up on the Tredegar part of your last email. My
cousin's father was Edmund Richard Powell born 6th June 1886 in Risca, Mon.
Edmond's parents were Thomas Powell and Margaret Williams, they married 16 October
1882 The Register Office, Newport, Mon.
On the 1901 Census, the place where Thomas Powell was born in approximately
1861 in Tredegar, Monmouthshire, Wales, Bedwellty. The children of Thomas and
Margaret Williams are:
Abode: 66 Lower Cwm Rd, Parish of Bedwellty - Ecc. Parish New Tredegar
RG 13/4942 pg ? 36/86
Thomas Powell Head 40 Coal Mine Hewer Tredegar Both
Eng and Welsh
Margaret Wife 39
Abercarn " "
John Son 16
Abercarn " "
Edmund Richard Son 14 Risca
" "
Sarah Dau 13
Abercarn " "
Margaret Rd Dau 9
Abercarn " "
William Joseph Son 4 Newbridge
English
David Ll Son 1
Cwmcyfriog English
? some of the spelling.
Thomas is on other Census stating that Richard and Margaret Powell are the
parents of Thomas, living in Civic Parish of Bedwellty, Ecc. Parish of
Tredegar.
I don't know if there is any connection with your Powell family, but thought
I would ask for my cousin who is 83, her mother was my mother's sister. I
have been searching for her paternal ancestors for her.
Any information would help in this search.
Kind Regards

Dear All
I am trying to find the death certificate of one Patrick Grant who married
Margerat Sheehy in 1907. On the marriage certificate the addresses are given as
the following
Patrick Grant lived at 22 Top Row Ebba Vale Newtown
Margerat Sheehy lived next door at number 23 Top Row Ebba Vale Newtown
I am trying to find who lived at these addresses in the 1901 census and to
this end I have looked at the enumerators districts. But because I have NO
knowledge of the area I cannot find which area the above addresses came under.
Please can anyone who has personal knowledge of this area help me on this one
One more question " What would be the main local newspaper for this area" as
I need to write to them to ask them to publish a letter requesting the
descendants of the above couple
I would appreciate the help of the list on this one, thank you
Veronica
