Does anyone know if there was a graveyard at this chapel or any registers I think my ancestors might have attended this chapel instead of St Elli. As I cannot find any burials at St Elli I think this most likely. I am looking for David and Rebecca MEREDITH and some children

Message to Iris Tamburri and Jon Nixey,
I think people have been confusing Llanelly Church with Llanelly Hill - Llanelly Hill is as far as I am aware on one side of Clydach Gorge, and the Church is the other side - please would someone help out here with the geography!!

Hi iris,
I'm sorry I don't know exactly where it is, all I know is that Llanelli Hill
is on the old mountain road leading from Blaenavon and heading down towards
the Abergavenny area, possibly Govilon? I don't know that area at all well,
even though some of my father's ancestors lived there about 120 + years ago
it appears. I have travelled through there (I believe?) but being blind I
wasn't totally aware of the route taken. I do know we headed from Brynmawr
towards Blaenavon, over 2 cattle grids, and at some point very very shortly
after the 2nd cattle grid there is a turning to the left, which if I recall
correctly has a signpost for Llanelli hill? Sorry I can't be of more help
but I'm sure there are ones on this list who can give you far more accurate
directions.
Hope you enjoy your visit to Wales, whenever that may be, and try and call
in to the Jolly Collier which is close by Llanelli Hill for a meal, just
tell them Jon with the guide dog recommended them.
very best wishes

Hello Linda,
It is Pwll-Y-Cwm, Maesygwartha, Breconshire in 1851. Only this weekend I
was researching a Williams family in Pwll-Y-Cwm, they were from
Peterchurch and Michaelchurch areas of Hereford.
From Powys FHS description of Llanelly in 1851 it encompasses the
following:-
Includes the Parishes of Aberbaiden, Gilwern, Blaen Dual, Clydach,
Coedcaenewydd, Mount Pleasant, Glan-sychnant, Penrhiw, Daren-Felen,
Gelli-felen, Brynmawr {Llangattock Parish}, Maesgwartha & Clydach.
A gg granduncle of mine, Denis Cheese, originally from Clodock, was
shown as a miller in 1861 census near the Turnpike road.
Maesygwartha is nearer to Gilwern. Seems the family worked their way up
the 'Black Rock' to Brynmawr which was as most Llangattock Parish.
What burials are you searching for, and what time-scales please?
best regards
Barrie Jones, Gwent

Hi Jon
Thanks for this link - what a beautiful church. Do you know where it is
exactly, as I would love to visit it when I am next in Wales. One of my
ancestors has Brychan as a middle name, and some of them used to live in
Llanelly, so I would be interested to see this church.
Thanks
Iris

Linda,
You are looking in the right place, Llanelly is just outside Brynmawr, I can't fathom "Pully Cown" but the other place is Maes-y-gwartha not Malsywartha. Llanelly is on the side of the Clydach Gorge, very steep and very picturesque.. There were various non-conformist chapels in Llanelly / Clydach (some of my ancestors married there) as well as Llanelly Church. Not sure either where "Aberbaiden" can be, I looked at 1891 census and couldn't find it.

Hi Linda.
I have Merediths in my family who lived in Llanelly area. They were from
Herefordshire.
Margaret Meredith (maiden name) now Margaret Rees is in the 1851 census for
Gilwern.
She lives with her mother Mary Meredith.
The burial records for that parish are in the Record office in cwmbran.
Please let us know if we have a match.

Glyn

Hi Listers.
I have taken a great deal of interest in the 'Chartists' of Brynmawr and I
am wondering if there is anyone who can further their story and possibly have
family links with those men who were involved. The centre of activity for the
Chartist Movement at Brynmawr was at The King Crispin Public House in
Boundary Street where David Lewis age 37 years and his family lived.Listed at that
address on the 1841 census are Ann Lewis 12 , Hannah Lewis 8, John Lewis 3,
Margaret Owen 25, Evan Evans 35 and Ann Evans 25. The King Crispin is not shown
any later census. The Chairman of the Chartist Meetings at the King Crispin
was Ishmael Evans. It is probable that this is the same Ishmael Evans 67,
who is shown on the 1851 census living with his family, David
35,Jane33,Margaret 14,Hannah 13,Mary 9, Ann 7 Martha 4, Jonathan 1 and Margaret Evans 63.at
Bailey St, Brynmawr. Ishmael is not shown on the 1861 census which suggests he
died 1851-1861.
David Lewis and Ishmael Evans appeared at Brecon Assi\zes in March 1841 and
were both sentenced to 7 years transportation. This was subsequently commuted
to three years imprisonment and they were interned at Millbank Prison.
Ishmael Evans served out his sentence but David Lewis became gravely ill and was
given an early release from prison. He died shortly afterwards and it is
believed that he was buried with four of his children, in Zion Cemetery which was
behind the Gwesty Bach Inn at Brynmawr. All the graves have now been removed
and, sadly, as far as I can find out, there is no burial record now available.
Also appearing at Brecon Assizes with them at the time, were the following
persons
Walter Meredith, William Price, William Williams, Thomas Kidley, James
Godwin and David Evans. They were all sentenced to two years hard labour and were
all bound over to keep the peace for two years in the sum of £50. I have been
helped in my enquiries by Roger Maggs,
Alan Broderick and the staff at Brecon Library. Undoubtedly this subject can
be more fully
dealt with in the many books and articles written about it but I am curious,
from the family angle, to ascertain more information about the events and
possible lineage to persons involved in those tragic times.

ello Robert,
It's me again, trying to solve where Kelly Cottage may be!
I don't know whether this is of use but on the 1891 census , a Kelly Cottage is located at the parish of LLantillio Pertholey, just outsise Abergavenny, in the old county of Monmouthshire. I also recall that there were paupers from this parish at Crickhowell Workhouse. You may find some of your family if you look up their names in this parish for other census years. I don't have a full census for 1861, so I am not able to help you.
All the best in your search.
Parish: Llantillio Pertholey, Piece 4348, Reel:6, Folio:74. of the 1891census.
Rev Margaret Williams.
