Judith Sylte from Washington State USA, and a recent visitor to Brynmawr,
has written an informative essay and provided photographs for Calvary
Baptist Church on King Street, and has kindly allowed me create a new web
page featuring her research. (She can do web pages too.) The new page is
located at:
http://www.thomasgenweb.com/calvary_church.html
Judy has also transcribed records from the church and is currently seeking
permission to have them published on the Internet.
A well deserved thanks goes out to Judy for bringing yet another important
piece of Brynmawr history to the Internet!

hello Judith,
I have just read your posting about mining agents being active in South
Wales. I am trying to locate a William Davies and his wife Hannah who were
supposed to have travelled to USA. William would have been in the mining
game like his father. Do you know where I might find the information that he
did travel to USA. He was still in South Wales at the time of the 1861
census. However from that time I have hit a brick wall.
Many thanks,
Marlene Davies

Do any of you know??? I do know from several sources that such agents were
active elsewhere in South Wales during that era -- especially in the early
60's when the American Civil War had so ramped up demand for coal and the
American collieries couldn't find enough skilled labor. The kind of
arrangement you describe, Connie, was pretty common then. I'd love to find
out whether such a connection existed for Brynmawr -- other than the Hughes
family connections we discussed here the other day, that is.

the time. There's a fascinating sampling of them from various regions of
Wales in Alan Conway's 1961 "The Welsh in America: Letters from Emigrants,"

Read your email regarding Griffiths connections in Scranton. My
husband's great grandfather and family came to Scranton from Merthyr
Tidvil around mid 1860's The names wereJames R, Griffiths, wife,
Elizabeth, Children Thomas R., Mary Jane, and Maria. A son William John
was born in Scranton in 1869. We can't get any further back than John R
and don't know if other Griffiths family members came at that time too.
If you know of anything, I would appreciate hearing.
Thanks.

My family came to America in 1923 from Abertillery.

Hi to all my fellow descendants of Welsh emigrants to the eastern Pennsylvania coalfield. I thank many of you for interesting and thoughtful notes both on and off this maillist, which I'll try to catch up on now that I'm back home.
A HUGE thanks to Jim Griffiths, Don Hughes, Bill Evans and Harold for offering to be my vicarious eyes in trying to get the information from my Powells' gravestone at Washburn Street. Information on the location and appearance of the grave can be found at my cousin Kathleen's webpage http://www.rootsweb.com/~paluzern/township/cemetery/avondale-washburn.htm. As you will see from the photo, not only my g-g-grandfather William Powell and his son James are buried there beside their fellow Avondale 1869 victims, but the stone also refers to Mary Phillips who has GOT to be William's daughter/James' sister Mary Powell. It was William, James and Mary who emigrated to America first; my g-g-grandmother Eliza and the younger children were apparently en route when Avondale went up in flames. I don't know whether the inclusion of Mary's name means that she, too, is buried there, or simply that she had the stone erected in their memory. Whoever can help my cousin Kathleen and me deci!
pher this stone will have our eternal thanks. And while you're at it, I've never determined whether James and Mary's younger brother George W. Powell (b. Brynmawr 28 Dec 1854 d. c. 1929 somewhere in or near Scranton) and his wife Sarah Hughes Powell are buried at Washburn St., too -- so if you happen to notice graves with those names, that would be true serendipity.
Thanks also to Kathy Nemaric for putting me on to "Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness" (www.raogk.com), which I had never heard of. Jim, Don, Harold and Bill have spared me the necessity of using that site, but it's a wonderful resource to know about.
Elaine, Jim, Don, Bill, Connie, Harold and Bonnie -- it's so interesting to hear about your ancestors' parallel migrations, however briefly. I hope you'll consider submitting accounts to Jeff Thomas' excellent Brynmawr and vicinity website, part of which is devoted to links with Pennsylvania: http://thomasgenweb.com/brynmawr.html. I never get tired of reading about emigrants' lives! What a momentous decision they all made...
And finally Harold, your account of why Washburn St. has fallen into such a state was most enlightening. Is Hugh Rodham buried there? If so, I hadn't realized that. Sounds like the guy who bled the endowment fund dry was a real scumbag.
Thanks again to all --
Judy

Hi all --
I'm home again now after an absence of a few days and find I'm W-A-Y behind on responding to many kind posts at this maillist as well as off-list. I'll respond to all the discussion of the Blaenau Gwent/Scranton connection and Washburn St. cemetery separately, but in this one I want to update you all once again on the status of the Calvary chapel records.
Since posting here last, I've finalized all transcriptions -- that is, until users such as yourselves point out errors in need of correction. I then indexed the entire collection in matrix format, so it's now possible at a glance to tell which specific church book sheets contain reference to a given individual. All in all, there are 609 individual names in the church book pages I photographed. The majority of these names appear repeatedly over some years.
Please keep in mind that these transcriptions contain no marriage records, and that all baptisms were adult. Nevertheless, I think many of you may find them of value.
Because I've been away, I've still made no progress contacting Pastor Howard Foster. (My fingers must have been on autopilot when I inadvertently called him Harold earlier -- I do know better....) So for now, I'll be glad to send anyone my Calvary information on a person-to-person basis, with the proviso that it can't be distributed further until I receive the OK from Calvary.
Bill and/or Joanne Shuker, I was happy to read your note on several counts. First, yes I'd most definitely appreciate help contacting Pastor Foster to seek his permission. Secondly, your brief outline of your Powells (Calvary's most faithful founding family) helps me at least begin to untangle your clan from mine in the Calvary records. The fact that there were two William Powell families there who were active over approximately the same time really makes things dicey! (Not surprisingly, the same problem arises with Jones, Davies, Williams, Nichols and other families at Calvary....) I can often tell when a William on a list is "mine" because his name is listed right next to his wife Eliza's -- but other times it's a tossup. Situations like this really made the indexing hard, and it will be important for any of us who use my index to compare notes and correct my inevitable errors wherever possible.
Anyhow, folks, feel free to contact me off-list if you'd like to look at the Calvary records. I'll be gone again on the Fourth of July itself, so please don't give up on me if I'm a little tardy responding to requests.
Cheers!

I have received an original copy of 'Tongs' Trade directory for Brynmawr
1906. Passed on to Blaenau Gwent libraries to photocopy for their
archives. Should receive back before the weekend. Will scan for our Ebbw
Vale branch of Gwent FHS and then donate to Brynmawr museum. Very
interesting entries.
I have been promised other Tongs directories for various years.
Barrie Jones, Gwent FHS
Hi Judith and all,
I have almost completed Brynmawr Municipal Cemetery 1854- 1932 (approx)
transcription. Just a few refinements to do. Will be bringing it out on
CD before too long as a Gwent FHS product (Ebbw Vale branch, of course).
While I have been checking I noticed about 15 pages missing off original
transcript which I have amended and added to my transcript.
If you could post me your Powell interests again please, then I will
check the full list 1854- and report back.
Jeff Thomas mentioned an 1880 map of Brynmawr. I visited Brecon library
yesterday (Wednesday) and found O.S. maps surveyed in 1876, 1877 and
printed in 1905. There were Tithe maps there also. Very small print and
the apportionment was on film. 'Professor' Rodger Burchell has earlier
maps, I believe, as he is carrying out a project on 'Mills' in Gwent and
Hereford, etc. When I get my hands on them I'll let you all know and
copy to post details.
Will be visiting National Library of Wales sometime next week,
hopefully, so will check their resources for maps, etc.
Brynmawr holdings re- Non-conformist registers are pretty poor for most,
Wesleyan stuff is in abundance. Rheobeth was rescued by Rodger Burchell
and is at Gwent CRO. It is mainly in the Welsh language. Blaenau Gwent
libraries have a facsimile copy. Just waiting for a Welsh language
transcriber!
Noticed someone is in contact with Pastor Fowler. If anyone can persuade
him to deposit archives for Calvary in either Powys or Gwent CRO it
would be great. If not I can pull a few strings this side. This way we
can transcribe the registers and make it available for all.
I am still transcribing 1841 census for Breconshire (for Powys FHS)
Crickhowell-Gilwern-Clydach-Brynmawr, etc. Over 8,000 names so far. It
is great use for our Blaenau Gwent resources although of course up until
1974 the area was Breconshire, of course.
best regards
Barrie Jones, Gwent FHS
