Hello,
Cwm is referred to as Cwm Merddach on a map showing the early farms of the area, but the map is undated.
I will scan the map and send it seperately.

Cwm near Ebbw Vale...has this had/or does have another name, or additional names to CWM? over the years? Like Cwm Merdoch, etc. Could not find a Cwm in that location, near Ebbw Vale on a Geodetic map I was recently refferred to...and other places I have looked. I realize it is a small, tiny even, place but had believe it to be there since the Romans? Is CWM the only name it has/is known by?
Hello all,
My name is Jeff Thomas. I've just joined the Bleanau Gwent mailing list and I'm looking forward to chatting with the folks here. I also try to post regularly on the Brynmawr Scene genealogy forum. For the past few months I've been researching my ancestors who lived in Brynmawr, and my wife and I made our first visit to Brynmawr in April. It was a wonderful trip and we were made to feel quite welcome by Sue, her husband and the other folks at the Brynmawr and District Museum.
I've identified my Thomas ancestors in the 1841 census, (John & Mary Thomas living on Somerset Street), and this family, (sans John who probably died before then), emigrated to Scranton, Pennsylvania in 1848.
My Davies ancestors (David & Hannah) were on Glamorgan Street in 1841/51, and on Worcester St (Llangattock) in 1861. They probably died before then because they are missing in the 1871 census and would have been in their mid-70s by then.
I've been trying to find out where David & Hannah were buried (if in Brynmawr at all). I've come up with nothing for Llanelly church (which makes sense considering they were Baptist), and also nothing for the town cemetery, thanks to the kind assistance of Steven Brown.
I'm also puzzled as to where John Thomas, who probably died between 1841 and 1848 mentioned above might have been buried. Again, Llanelly seems a no-go because the family were again Baptist, although there is a potential match there, and his death occurred well before the town cemetery was opened. I've ordered a series of death certificates with one possible match, but nothing definitive.
Since my ancestors were Baptists in Brynmawr from the 1820s to the 1860s, I suppose it's likely that they were members of either Calvary or Tabor, although I understand that there are no records for either.
I've already checked certain parish records for the area - the parish churches at Llanelly and Blaina, as well as other non-conformist registers from around Nantyglo, but this too has so far proved to be a dead end.
I would appreciate any advice or suggestions as to either tracking my family further in the town, or perhaps finding where they were buried.
Thanks,
Jeff Thomas

Dear All,
Our Ebbw Vale Branch of Gwent Family History Society (FHS) will be
representing the Blaenau Gwent area. Historically, Abertillery, Blaina,
Nantyglo, Tredegar, Ebbw Vale, Rhymney. Bedwellty, Uchlawrcoed,
Ichlawrcoed, Aberystruth (Blaina and Nantyglo) at the Gwent FHS Open Day
this coming Saturday 12th June.
All 6 Gwent Branches will also be there, Abergavenny / Monmouth,
Blackwood, Chepstow, Ebbw Vale (US!), Pontypool, Newport.
All Gwent FHS will be on the first floor. Janet Karn, of Blaenau Gwent
libraries, will be there, usually next to our Ebbw Vale stand.
This year there will be a Gwent help desk on the ground floor to direct
you to us (heavenly bodies above:)) Len Hough, our president will be
manning the help desk. You can identify him by his gold chain of
course!
Hope to see some of you there. Brenda and myself will be there early and
troops from Ebbw Vale will hopefully arrive later to give us relief at
times;))
We would be pleased to meet anyone on the list of course!
best regards
Barrie Jones, Gwent
Dear Anne,
Sounds like you had the same upbringing as myself;) Living in
Pantyscallog, near Merthyr Tydfil the only holiday we had (from 5 till
about 13) was the fortnight miners break in Porthcawl at "Butty Bay"!
I practically lived in the local outdoor swimming pool from May until
September. Sun, Rain, hail or thunder:)) Came home for the odd meal
sometimes.
It wasn't until I was about 12 that I ventured to Monmouthshire and that
was via Tredegar bus station, Cheltenham to London. That was before the
A465 of course. I worked in the telephone exchange in Blaina when it was
later on the West side. There was another Barrie Jones working there as
well, he was nicknamed Bonzo and me just 'BJ'.
Don't take what I say seriously. I never mean to offend anyone, we are
all here to help each other, compass or not:))
I missed the Nantyglo, Blaina walk. Believe Frank Olding took that one.
Frank is BG Heritage officer. He is extremely interesting and has a real
big interest about Blaenau Gwent, historically and Heritage-wise, of
course.
best regards
Barrie Jones, Gwent FHS

Dear Gail,
I just noticed your last name. My GGrandfather was a DeLahay from the Island of Jersey. They were on that island from at least the 1300's on. Does your family tie into that area???

Hi. I am new to the list and only recently started looking into family
history. My father in law Walter DELAHAY(E) was born in Blaenavon but his
father was born in Nantyglo. I have found the family at Orchard Houses in
1883 and at Caban Gwyn in 1891. I hope to be in the area at the end of the
month and look forward to learning more about the town and its people.

Dear Barry
I was greatly intrigued by the name of your great Aunt. A distant uncle of
mine, David Davies, who lived in Vale Terrace, Tredegar in 1881, was married
to a lady called Typhena. She was born Typhena Wright, and her family at
the time of the marriage lived at 27 Vale Terrace, Tredegar. This is pretty
clearly a West Country name. (The marriage was solemnised in Rhymney, which
I find a little strange, except that David's family were living in the
parish of Bedwellty in Argoed Buildings, Argoed (now long since demolished)
and seem to have had connections to the valley next door.) The family came
from Bitun (?), Devon. I wonder if there is a connection here, despite the
slight difference in spelling. I'd be interested in your comments. (I
lived most of my early life in Tredegar, starting in 25 Southend with my
grandparents, then moving to 8 Market St, and then to 30 Arnold Place, where
my mother, now in her 91st year, still lives.)
Best wishes
Alan

Hi All,
Our Ebbw Vale research evening is being held this Thursday, June 3rd, at
Beaufort H.Q. The Chapel is being used as a polling station for the
local elections on June 10th, hence the earlier date.
Our friends from OZ will be there to make an appearance and find more
information on their families. One of them was a member in 1987!
Keith Thomas, our local historian, author, lecturer, preacher, has
deposited some old maps and various publications.... we are not worthy:)
I am polishing up the Brynmawr Muni Cemetery (1854-1932) to cater for
their needs. It has been a long haul but in less than 6 months I will
get it on CD as an Ebbw Vale publication.
Try to come along! My great aunt, Tryphena Lewis from Merthyr Tydfil has
promised to be there, but lately her legs are playing her up, so who
knows? She is 87 this year, but she is a spring chick! Survived 3
husbands and is still on the hunt! Her boyfriend (Alfie Bond) is
fetching her over, he is 67! Her eldest son is 70. He's in a nursing
home, needs the rest, you bet!
best regards
Barrie Jones, Gwent
Dear Keith
I am so pleased you posted that, I had been thinking about it ever since I
read Barrie's posting - and wondering if my memory was playing tricks. I am
not near enough at the moment to achieve anything by going and looking
outside.
best wishes
Anne
