Hello Elaine,
Do you mean Carmel Welsh Congregational chapel in Beaufort or Carmel
Welsh Baptist in Tredegar?
We have information and chapel histories of both chapels. We have
transcribed Carmel Welsh Congregational baptisms 1826-1837, which
doesn't appear to be on the Gwent County Records archives as yet.
County Records Office at Cwmbran have both Carmel registers
At our HQ in Beaufort we have the History of Carmel in booklet form. I
hope to bring out both publications, with the chapels permission of
course. At the moment these are on our library shelves and CD archive
for members and visitors alike.
Who are you researching re-Prices?
best regards
Barrie Jones, Gwent FHS

Hi Barrie,
Try as I might I cannot find this publication on the FHS site. I would be

Last week picked up the new Gwent FHS publication from Ann Macey our
sales officer at Gwent Family History Society. The book is in A4 and 79
pages and called "Some people of Old Blaina" (from Approximately 1840)
priced 5GBpounds. (postage 50p UK)
For outside UK follow link at Gwent FHS:-

Ben Fieldhouse, who died in 2001, had started to compile the information
and I happened to stumble across the original 'field notes' at our Ebbw
Vale branch library two years ago. Len Hough (Gwent President)
approached me at our Gwent Family History Open Day at Cwmbran CRO and I
told him that it would make a good publication and would especially be
of interest to our Blaenau Gwent catchment area. Len said it needed a
lot more work done research wise before it could be published.
Now, nearly 2 years on, it is ready, thanks to Len and of course it was
Ben's baby! I think it is as good a seller as Ben's other books on the
coal mining disasters " and they worked us to death" (books 1-3)
Chapters of Churches and Chapels of 1851, Restoration of St Peters
Church, Wesleyan Methodist baptisms 1849-1887, marriages at St Peters
(selection), Friendly societies, Blaina Iron company (a Company Town)
1871-1873), Cholera deaths in 1849, colliers of Blaina and Nantyglo,
Schooling, admissions to Blaina British boys school from 1870 and
Nantyglo National girls school 1866-1876, Blaina Girl's school
admissions 1870-1880, and also a few old families of Blaina.
To purchase this publication visit the Gwent FHS site at:-
http://www.rootsweb.com/~wlsgfhs/Sales/Main.htm#HowTo
copy the above into your browser or search engine (Google, Yahoo, etc.),
enter and you got it!
I bought 2 copies, one for the library and one for me. You can guarantee
that I will be buying at least 10 copies for cousins and friends!
Noticed the Sirhowy families book for sale in Marshalls newsagents at
Ebbw Vale today. Will check it out and let you know soooon!

Hi Barrie,
it seems that you had a wonderful time in Florida.
You mentioned the Welsh societies abroad i.e. U.S.A. Do you know if there
are any of the same sort of thing in Australia?
After all there were loads of Welsh men emmigrated down under, including the
three Lloyd brothers in 1854 from Llanwenarth Citra Monm.

Hello Bill and list,
Just returned from Sarasota (Florida) where I met up with my wife's
cousin Anne C Young and Don Hughes, both subscribers to this Blaenau
Gwent list.
Read with interest Bill's extremely interesting site. It never ceases to
amaze me the contribution of ex-pats to the Welsh traditional ways,
especially since my visit in the last fortnight .
Don Hughes and Anne Young and other Sarasota folk met up for Saint
David's day in Saratosa. Don is a big influence in this setup and Anne
says he has a really good voice. They would dearly love a male or female
Welsh choir to visit them for next years festival. It seems as if choirs
seem to overlook the Florida area. Why not, it has a really enthusiastic
lot of folk who would love to hear the real Welsh singing.
Don and co. also receive the Newspaper 'Ninnau' (means 'us' or 'we
also') I downloaded the April edition from:- http://www.ninnau.com/ by
going to the front page link and downloading the pdf file. 24 pages.
I saved the copy to my hard drive. The magazine is 'North American' but
is contributed to people even in this country. Bill's site has a mention
of course.
There is also a link to Welsh societies abroad:- http://www.wales-usa.org/society.html
I am particularly interested with my Davies's (maternal line) who
settled in Nanticoke (P.A.) in 1890's and later settled in Brooklyn
later (1930's).
best regards
