Hi Adina, maybe just coincidence, we had several Elizabeths in our SMITH
family, or maybe another family altogether! I do know that there were three
William SMITHs born in 1852 in Pontypool alone, one was our ggranddad !
Many thanks for your reply and kind regards Mick

Hi Chris, I have a William smith born approx 1813 in Monmouthshire! Married
to a Sarah DAVIES or POWELL on Christmas Day 1845 in Panteague. They had
six children - Rachel and John were twins born 2/8/1849, William born
17/3/1852, (ggranddad), Elizabeth born Feb 1854, Francis John born 1856 and
Thomas born 1860. It was Elizabeth who married Joseph LEWIS in 1873 and
then went off to Australia aboard the Highflyer in 1878. Ring any bells,
regards Mick

We are researching the names Vaughan, Davies and Samuel - so far - in
Blaina and Nantyglo and wonder if anyone else is researching the same
families.
Elizabeth daughter of John and Elizabeth Samuel married John Davies 5
September, 1819 in Aberystruth.
Catherine daughter of Elizabeth and John Davies married William Vaughan in
the Parish Church of Aberystruth on 23 May, 1845
William Vaughan's father was Thomas Vaughan.
I have been unable to find William Vaughan or Catherine Davies in 1841 or
together in 1851 but we have them from 1861 onwards and they appear to have
lived at Shrubbery Row, Blaina from then onwards.
I think that a brother of William Vaughan lived next door to him in 1871
but his name is on the previous page which I forgot to take a copy of! If
anyone has access to 1871 census for Blaina and can tell me the name of the
man married to Mary Vaughan 40 yrs. of Shrubbery Row I would be very
grateful.

Unless of course it was really called GWALIA, which is an old name for
Wales. There are lots of places in Wales including houses and farms, tea
shops, hotels etc., called Gwalia .
There's a well known Welsh male voice choir of that name in London and
there's even a gold mine in Australia called Sons of Gwalia, no doubt
founded by Welsh exiles.

gwala means "enough, plenty, fill, fullness, sufficiency" dependig where you
look it up
although it seems odd as a house name. There maybe an older use of the word

Hi Chris,
I too have Lloyds born Monmouthshire first one I know
of
born at Usk was Thomas 1773 married Jemimah Williams.
I too have Lewis's. Mine came over on the ship Baroque Tiberius in 1869.
Here I have been looking for the ancestor's of Lewis and it just dawned on
me that my Lewis's could have come over to meet his family because he
brought his entire family over to Baltimore and they settled in Frostburg,
MD. So now I am on the search again for Lewis's that came over before my
John R. Lewis.
Take Care,

Hi Mick
Funny thing. My Lewis married an Elizabeth (we suspect maiden name is
Smith but not sure) who was born in Pontypool also. only these Lewises
did not go to Australia that I know of. In fact, Elizabeth is buried in
Blaina Cemetary. We have her funeral card. The Lewis family of which I
am searching shows up in the 1881 British census as living ato 10 Market
Place, Ystradyfodwg, Glamorgan, Wales.
Funny coincidence.
Adina

Hi Adina,
I am so sorry but there is no match. My Lewis family came
from Llantillio Crossenny. It seems there are almost as many Lewis as Morgan
names
bye for now

Hi Marianna
I, too, am looking for the Lewis name. My ggrandparents were from

daughter Emily married my grandfather Benjamin Turner. They lived in
Abertillery until the late 1920s when they immigrated to America with my

is. Not sure where the Lewis were living but it was around that area.
Thanks for any help you might have regarding this group.
