Hello Jane,
According to my notes Mount Zion (Briery Hill, Ebbw Vale) Methodist
church was built in 1874. I will have to check our branch library chapel
and church records for a history. I am sure I filed a copy somewhere.
Here are some ministers that I found in Trade directories:-
1923, Rev Walter Watts Price
1934, Rev Francis Robert Branskill
1937, Rev Francis Robert Branskill
Can't see any Ebenezer Enos or Enos Enos on 1881 census, Wales. What
information do you have on the Enos's please?
best regards

Enos is supposed to have founded the chapel. It is now no longer in use
but still standing (just). The local methodist minister did not have any
information. Does anyone know if there are any histories available,
either books or on the web, which would confirm or deny my legend that
my ancestor founded the said chapel?
All help gratefully received!

Absolutely true. It's sometimes very much easier for Americans, and
others, to trace their roots than it is for UK citizens.
People in the former colonies generally know where their ancestors came
FROM, but it's sometimes impossible for us in Britain to find out where
ours went TO.
I have a whole generation of missing ancestors. Did they go to the US,
Australia, Canada or New Zealand?
Or did they just move to a different part of the UK? I'd love to know.
My family originally came from a small town five miles away from the
birthplace of a famous namesake - Sir Matthew HALE, who was Lord Chief
Justice at the time of Cromwell. I sometimes wonder if there is a family
connection, but I have made no attempt to prove it, because I think that's
the wrong way to do genealogy. You follow the leads wherever they take you.
But I've lost count of the number of people who have contacted me claiming
to be related to Sir Matthew. I have to say this - and, believe me, I'm
not American bashing - nearly all of them have been from the US. Not a
single one has been able to prove their claim, and in fact there's no
evidence that any of Sir Matthew's family ever went to the USA.
If you do find that you are related to someone famous or royal, fine. But
to set out to prove that you are is just bad genealogy.
Cheers,
Glyn Hale

Dear Subscribers,
I rcently went up to The Brecon Registry Office looking for a Brynmawr Birth
Certificate which I felt quite sure would be found recorded within the
parish of Crickhowell. The registra at Brecon, who is very helpful, pointed out
that the birth was in the registration district of Crickhowell but actually in
the parish of Llanelly. A telephone to Tredegar Registry confirmed this and I
subsequently got my certificate. I find , registration wise, that Brynmawr is
a confusing place. Registrations could be in either, Llangottock,
Aberstruth, Bedwellty or Llanelly. Can some kind soul tell me where I can get a map
which clearly indicates the parish boundaries or tell me when and where they
changed. Thanks. Ray Hapgood.

I have both UK and early New England ancestors, and I find large
differences in records available. The early New Englanders (not so in
New York, unfortunately) kept town records that consisted of vital
records of births, marriages and deaths, as well as land and probate
records (colonists could actually own land, and most did), Many town
records also give information on males of voting age, town positions to
which they were elected, etc. And these records go back into the early
1600s and these are extant, published, and widely available.
On the contrary, for most citizens of the U.K., they had vital records
found in the parish registers, but alone these do not always provide
precise relationships between generations even among those with a
common surname. Many but comparatively few owned land and left wills
where relationships among members of a family are often laid out in
exquisite detail.
So, U.S. citizens who descended from the early come overs (and a huge
proportion do) have a "leg up" on ancestral research as well as
finding connections with landed families in the U.K. which give many
Americans the ancestral connections with the upper class and royal
families.
That is not to say they were more likely descended from those families,
only that where those descents occurred, there is a better chance of
proving it.
There is no doubt in my mind that U.K. citizens share the same
proportion of royal or landed ancestry, but from extant genealogical
data it is more difficult to prove.

We have a superb resource here in Boston, the New England Historic
Genealogical Society, one of the oldest and respected of such organizations.
They have a wealth of information in their extensive library particularly as
it relates to old New England families likes the Bushes and Kerry's mother's
side, the Forbes, as well as the initial settlers of New England in the 17th
Century. In fact their researchers showed that Bush and Kerry share common
ancestors many generations back. They often produce this kind of research
during political campaigns and are probably the best qualified to do so.
Visit their site www.NEGHS.org to get an idea of their wealth of resources.
And for the record, no one has claimed descendency from William the
Conquerer for either candidate.

I don't recall who posted the Kerry descendency to this list in the first
place but it was sourced from the BBC Wales website and was a fairly
innocent, non-political story. Mick's gratuitious insults aimed at
Americans were themselves unnecessary and substantially more political than
the Kerry piece.

Spare us all the gratuitous American bashing. We expect that from French
